Xiaomi is no stranger to the gaming market. In addition to gaming smartphones, the company also manufactures gaming monitors. Their latest such product is the Xiaomi Gaming Monitor G27i, a $160 27" monitor, which was recently released. We'll take a closer look at it in this review.

Xiaomi Gaming Monitor G27i contents and specs

The G27i monitor has an MSRP of $159.99; but Xiaomi will have an exclusive discount during the Walmart Deals event next week. During the event, which starts July 8 and ends July 11, the gaming display will receive a 31% discount, and will cost $110 via the Walmart product page. Whether you buy the G27i during the Walmart Deals event or after, you will find the following items in the package:
  • Xiaomi Gaming Monitor G27i x 1
  • Stand x 1
  • Base x 1
  • Power Adapter x 1
  • HDMI Cable x 1
  • User manual x 1
  • Screw Toolkit x 1

An affordably-priced gaming monitor with a quality build

Among its product lineup, the price range of Xiaomi's products cater to nearly every budget. There's the $1600+ Xiaomi 14 Ultra and now the $160 G27i monitor. But a consistent factor of the company's product, irrespective of the price tag, is the product quality. There used to be some bias towards the quality of Xiaomi products but in recent years, the company has proved this to be a thing of the past.

The G27i, even if it is affordably priced, packs a quality hardware and finish. Its matte finish and thin bezels make the product look sleek on your desk. At its thinnest dimension, it measures 7.5mm. There is a rear bump but it is not as bulky at only 170mm at its thickest.

It's easy to set up the base and all the tools you need are included in the package. With the base attached, the monitor is held securely in place, with no wobbling or risk of toppling over. There is also an option to mount the G27i on your wall but a wall mount bracket is not included in the package, so you will have to source that separately.

I was positively surprised to see that Xiaomi designed the G27i with adjustable viewing angles. The display has a tilt angle between around -5° and +15°, allowing you to easily adjust it to your liking and for the optimal viewing angle based on your setup. It really makes a difference as the viewing angle is different if you are gaming up close with a keyboard and mouse or from a distance with a controller. It's an important feature that I think is being downplayed by Xiaomi as it is not advertised as much as it should have been.

I also appreciated the space between the lower end of the monitor and the base. This allows for accessories such as sound bars to be neatly nested underneath.

For further viewing adjustments, the ability to customize the height of the display would be welcome. Unfortunately, this is not a feature of the G27i and I hope that Xiaomi considers it in their future monitors.

That said, the overall quality of the monitor, with the ability to adjust viewing angles, is more than a decent package for the cost.

Gaming experience on the Xiaomi Gaming Monitor G27i

With a gaming monitor, the hardware quality is important but the visual quality is even more crucial. The Xiaomi Gaming Monitor G27i scores highly on both fronts. Being designed with gaming in mind really shows when the monitor is in use.

With up to 165Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time, visuals are smooth and fluid while on-screen controls are swift and responsive. It also supports AMD's FreeSync Premium feature that addresses screen tearing and stuttering.

You can further tune the display settings to your liking on the device itself. There's a handy on-screen menu that can be toggled with the joystick-like control at the back. This allows you to monitor the refresh rate, toggle features such as HDR and FreeSync and tune other parameters such as brightness, contrast and color temperature based on your needs.

While it's not the biggest monitor out there nor does it have the highest resolution, the 1080p, 27" LCD display with a 16:9 aspect ratio lends itself very well for gaming. Pictures are clear and reproduced with vibrant colours that are faithful to the source. Whether it's single player games such as Still Wakes the Deep and Senua's Saga: Hellblade II or multiplayer games such as Hypercharge: Unboxed, the G27i outputs detailed visuals with a natural color palette and rich contrast.

Of course, this external display can also double as a productivity tool to expand your work space. It's a plug-and-play affair to pair it to your laptop or desktop computer over HDMI and you'll have instant access to an additional 27" work canvas. The high refresh rate and quality visuals make it an easy choice for work but as well as for general entertainment such as streaming videos. However, you'll have to keep in mind that the G27i is not a standalone device as it does not come packed with Android TV but needs to be plugged to an external source.

Xiaomi Gaming Monitor G27i: an impressive budget gaming display with a few caveats

Considering the cost, hardware build and visual quality, the Xiaomi Gaming Monitor G27i offers value for money. I haven't had any issues with it, whether during my gaming sessions on my PC or Xbox, streaming videos or for work. The display has been faithful to the source with no screen tearing or lags.

However, the 1920×1080 resolution and 27" screen size might not be attractive to everyone. These specs might feel limiting and not high-end enough. But if you're low on desk space and need an affordable monitor for your PC or console, you can't go wrong with the G27i.

That said, there are some downsides to note. My main complaint is with the limited number of ports that the monitor packs. It only has a DP port, an HDMI 2.0 port, an audio port, and a DC IN cable port. If you have more than one device that relies on an HDMI connection, you'll need to swap the cable every time you change the source. There is also no USB-C port through which you could expand your phone or tablet (with video output support over USB-C) or even plug an adapter for additional HDMI ports. Such a limitation might have resulted as a decision to keep costs down but having more ports would be welcome.

Another cost-cutting decision is the lack of integrated speakers. While there is a volume control option in the menu, the monitor has no speakers that could allow it to be used with a device such as an Android TV box. It's a downer but for gaming, you'll likely want good sounding systems or headphones; and the G27i has a headphone jack at least.

Overall, if you're looking for a decent gaming monitor that won't break the bank, the Xiaomi Gaming Monitor G27i is definitely worth considering. But bear in mind that it lacks integrated speakers and has a limited number of output ports. If you can work with that, you might not find a better deal elsewhere.

Speaking of deals, during the Walmart Deals event, the G27i will cost $109.99 (31% off) via the Walmart product page. The event officially begins on Monday, July 8, at 12 p.m. EST, and will run for four days, ending on Thursday, July 11, at 11:59 p.m. EST.
