Itsuno left Capcom in August after over 30 years working on hit games like Devil May Cry and Dragon's Dogma.
The LightSpeed website says the new Japan studio will be in Tokyo and Osaka, mainly working on AAA game development — though what games exactly is still unknown at this point.
Here's what they officially say:
The studio aims to spark innovation by blending multi-platform, cross-device tech, making a space where creativity and technical skill can flourish. The team will try to push game creation in new directions, always looking for fresh ways to approach gameplay and storytelling.
Itsuno called his new job "an exciting new chapter", saying he now wants to build a team to work on the studio's "original AAA action game titles":
Joining LIGHTSPEED STUDIOS opens an exciting new door for me. With LightSpeed's strong development skills and global reach, I'm eager to create original AAA action games with this amazing team and craft innovative, beautiful experiences for players worldwide. We invite talented, passionate game makers from everywhere to join our mission.
Besides the series mentioned earlier, Itsuno also directed franchises like Rival Schools and Power Stone. The latter will be coming to Switch next year in Capcom Fighting Collection 2.
