News Game Size Not as Important as It Used to Be, Says Yakuza Creator

Yakuza/Like a Dragon mastermind Toshihiro Nagoshi believes the time of games needing massive scale is winding down. As game releases flood the market, vying for players' scarce leisure hours, Nagoshi thinks it's natural for size to become less critical in judging games as their numbers grow.

In a Famitsu chat (via VGC), Nagoshi, who departed RGG Studios a while back to craft an unnamed game for NetEase at Nagoshi Studio, shared his aim to "create a game that's fun but not too demanding." He elaborated on his thinking: "I feel the number of console games in regular gamers' lives might be a bit much. Despite many titles still launching, I sense the era where sheer volume was a selling point is ending."

When the interviewer noted that a big map can work well if filled with diverse content, Nagoshi concurred: "That's key. You could pack it with elements for a rich feel, but it's outdated to repeat similar experiences... I think we're approaching a time to figure out the right size to balance everything."
