A Fire Emblem Fates Modding Tutorial for editing and making items.

As mentioned by Moonling in their original tutorial, "Paragon is a new tool created by Thane98 for editing 3DS FE game like Awakening, Fates, and Shadows of Valentia. The main focus of Paragon, however, is Fates."

Paragon has since been updated, having everything created and edited with Thane98's most recent Paragon. As of this tutorial, the current version of Paragon is Alpha 2-2-2.

This tutorial will serve as an updated guide to Moonling's original tutorial linked above! Please go check it out if you need any help with the old version of Paragon. Without further ado, lets get started!

Please be mindful of the colored texted. Its VERY important to pay attention to the RED text as its a requirement and is a variable that stays consistent when modding Fates.

Prerequisites:

You will the following items:

  • New Paragon by Thane98
  • A dump of Fates
  • A modding profile setup in Paragon. Go to this link to learn how to setup a Paragon profile!

IMPORTANT NOTES:


Custom models require devtools in order to import. I would like to prevent any legal action in the future, so any information regarding them will not be disclosed in this guide.

Textures for weapons can still be edited using Kuriimu, FEAT, and BCH tool by Moonling. However, I will not be covering it in this tutorial, as this will simply serve as an entry level guide for setting up items in Fates.

The Items Module:


If you have ever worked with a database before, you're going to appreciate the structure of this program. Everything is organized and easy to understand after a few trial runs. In this tutorial, we are going to focus on the Item's module as seen in the images below.

To add an Item, click on the top left where it says "Add". From there, a new entry will be created at the bottom of the menu. Scroll down until you find your empty entry named "Item"

Click on the entry and you will be met with an empty entry. Depending on what you're trying to make, I recommend finding another item and clicking on "Copy to" to copy the information into that new entry. For this tutorial, I will explain what each box does.
(Side Note: When in doubt, copy what the original devs did. If you want something to be like the bronze sword, do what is mentioned about the "Copy to" function and edit what is necessary).

Stats Tab

The Red represent what must stay consistent, while the Green represents what you can change.
We will first go over important sections.
  • IID - The internal Unique ID. The format must be as follows, "IID_YourUniqueName".
  • Name - The top space is the internal ID name, formatted as follows, "MIID_YourUniqueName".
    The bottom bar will be what the players see's. For this example, I will call it The Banana Blade.
  • Description - Similar to how the name works, the description of the item is as follows, "MIID_H_YourUniqueItem". The bottom bar will be the descriptor. Follow the formats of other weapons if you're having trouble with spacing.
  • Weapon Category, Non Weapon Category, and Item Position - Click the drop boxes and fill as needed. Item list position
  • Bonuses & Mt - Self-explanatory. These are the stats of the weapon itself.
  • Other Stats - These are the requirements to wield the weapon/staff, as well as the range.
  • Flags & References - I normally keep this as the same as vanilla items. When in doubt, follow what the Fates devs did.
  • Extra Data - This section is particular to the item. For example, weapons that give debuffs when making contact on an enemy are determined here. I'm not really good at explaining this section, so I will use what Moonling explained in their original tutorial as reference.

Flags Tab


The flags tab is where the game is told what unique features this item or weapon has. For example, if the weapon is unique to Ryoma only like the Rajiinto, you would check the "Ryoma Only" flag. Feel free to experiment what the other flags do, as they are mostly self explanatory.

My Castle & Misc Tab


This where the price of the item is determined, as well as where it can be bought from, and if it can be won through lottery. Feel free to follow another item's format!

Once you're finished with your edits/entries, be sure to save! Simply go to the Paragon main menu and click "File" then "Save".

ROM1 Module


Now that we made our item, we need to assign a 3D model for it. This will determine its look in game when a unit is wielding it. Navigate to the "ROM1" module and a new menu will open.

Similar to how we made our first item entry in the item module, click on "Add" and scroll down to your new item. From there, you are going to click on it and fill the section at the top where it says "Name" with the IID of your item. For my example, I will put my IID for my Item.

Now that my entry is made, we need to assign it a model. In the Overview menu, scroll down until you see the "Weapon" section. The "Weapon Model" section will be empty. This is where we will give it a weapon to reference. Other weapons, such as the Raijinto, have something in the space as reference. These are the physical models themselves. So, if I want my weapon to look like the Raijinto, I will copy and paste as seen below.

After you fill the "Weapon Model" space with the model you want, make sure to save! Go back to the Paragon main menu, click "File" and then "Save".
