The latest Black Ops game is seemingly trying to satisfy all kinds of Call of Duty fans by offering players a lot of new and old gameplay elements. The official Black Ops 6 reveal at the Xbox Games Showcase has shown that the game will be focusing on a mixture of new and ground-breaking mechanics, bringing back fan-favorite features like classic Prestige alongside innovations like Omnimovement. BO6 bringing back split-screen may be good news for longtime fans, but it has some downsides.
As confirmed by Activision, the split-screen gameplay in Black Ops 6 will only allow two players to share the screen, as opposed to the four-player setup in games like BO3. This will surely be a letdown for larger squads who were expecting a split-screen mode that allows for four players to share a screen. This is especially disappointing for players who are looking forward to the Zombies mode in Black Ops 6, as it's certainly more enjoyable when there is a full group of four people in the squad to fight the undead. While the series has not featured four-player split-screen since Black Ops 3, and it is nice that even the two-player split-screen exists, it is a bit disappointing that the four-player option is not coming back alongside Zombies' return to form.
Black Ops 6's Split-Screen Option Might Disappoint Players
Another downside of the two-player split-screen mode is that it will only be available on current gen consoles, i.e., Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. This is quite disheartening for last gen console players who are waiting for the game to release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. According to Activision, the devs are not allowing split-screen gameplay on last gen consoles to ensure performance integrity. It is not yet clear whether PC players will have the split-screen option, but many fans obviously think it would be great if the choice was available on PC.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been in development for quite a long time, and based on the reveal trailer and info that was released after the Xbox event, it seems like Treyarch and Raven have gone full throttle with the gameplay features and mechanics in the upcoming title. Black Ops 6 will feature major movement changes compared to previous titles, as it will introduce omnidirectional movement along with a revamped and customizable HUD and a classic approach to Prestiging.
The campaign mode in Black Ops 6 is another intriguing part of the game. It will feature a rogue spy narrative starring the fan-favorite character Frank Woods and a brand-new protagonist. The story mode will also bring back other characters from previous Black Ops titles, like Russell Adler. With so much promise, most long-term CoD fans are eagerly anticipating the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
