Telenet's Genesis JRPG Traysia (known as Minato no Traysia in Japan) isn't renowned as one of the best examples of the genre, but it has its fans – and those same fans will no doubt be pleased to learn that it's getting a new physical release next year.
A collaboration between LLC Shinyuden, Ratalaika Games SL and Edia Co.,Ltd., this new release will also see the game get a brand-new English localisation, as well as a Spanish translation – something that didn't happen back in the 1990s.
"Dive deeper into the art of Mahiro Maeda, the acclaimed designer of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Nausicaa and the Vision of Escaflowne," says the official site. "Postcard and posters are high-resolution images from the original game's manual and box...
Mega Cat Studios has teamed up with Video Game Sage and Reddit's Retrogaming community page to create a new game for the SNES, sales of which will support the charity Child's Play.
Super Excidium Event is described as "the SNES game that Reddit built" and came about when Mega Cat Studios and the r/Retrogaming community came together to brainstorm a new shmup.
"Set in deep space, this interstellar epic is a throwback to the glory days of arcade gaming that's sure to soothe the itchiest of trigger fingers," reads the press release. "As intrepid space pilots soar across perilous alien terrain and master the game's unique four-way weapons system, they'll trade shots with deadly swarms of enemy ships and a bestiary of epic bosses hell-bent...
Earlier this year, G-Mode released a remake of Yuji Horii's 1984 Famicom adventure Hokkaido Rensa Satsujin: Ohotsuku ni Kiyu for Nintendo Switch and Steam internationally, allowing Western players to experience an expanded version of the classic command-based detective story with English subtitles.
Hokkaido Serial Murder Case: The Okhotsk Disappearance ~Memories in Ice, Tearful Figurine~ proved to be a popular title in its native Japan, briefly topping the sales charts, and later gained some attention online after the discovery of an NSFW Easter Egg that paid tribute to a similar secret hidden in the original game.
But, as spotted by one of our readers named Coire, it appears that the game has now mysteriously been delisted from the...
Since the arrival of its N64 module, Polymega fans have had a rather quiet year. Firmware updates have been sporadic, and when they have been forthcoming, they often unintentionally break things.
However, there's been a minor flurry of activity recently with the announcement of the Polymega Collection, a new range of physical releases exclusive to the modular retro system featuring a curated series of games based on a single property. Asteroids and Karate Champ kick things off – they're both available now.
To accompany their launch, Polymega maker Playmaji has released the coveted v1.1.32 firmware update. As well as enabling support for the new Polymega Collection discs, this update adds in some new stuff and fixes a lot of the issues...
Rare's Battletoads is one of the most iconic action platformers of the '90s, and was positively bursting with ideas and set-pieces – it's also as hard as nails, a trait which has both endeared and annoyed people in equal measures over the decades.
While many people think of Battletoads as a property inexorably linked to Nintendo – perhaps due to Rare's close connection with the company back then and the fact that it began life on the NES – Rare's green-skinned heroes were not exclusive to Nintendo hardware. The game would be ported to other systems, including the Genesis, Game Gear and even the Amiga CD32.
Knowing which of these versions is the best can be tricky, so Inglebard Gaming has stepped in to take the pain out of the...
No matter how highly we rate our personal hygiene, it's impossible to keep your hands totally clean 100% of the time – and when you think that multiple people may have handled some of our old-school controllers over the past few decades, it's inevitable that they will pick up at least some funky gunk in that time.
If you're still not convinced, then check out the video below, posted by modder and engineer Voultar. It shows a Japanese Sega Saturn control pad getting a lovely bath.
"This Saturn controller has 30 years of human gunk and & filth," says Voultar. "These units require a meticulous restoration down to every component. No, a Clorox wipe isn't sufficient. Notice how disgusting the water gets in the ultrasonic cleaner? Gross!"...
Humungous Entertainment's Backyard Soccer '98 is now available on Steam & Steam Deck, thanks to the developer Mega Cat Studios and publisher Playground Productions.
The two companies announced back in August that they were working together to bring back the iconic series of children's sports games, with Playground Productions also expressing hopes to launch merchandise, as well as film and television projects, based on the property.
Since then, they have gone on to rerelease the very first game in the Backyard Sports series Backyard Baseball '97 on Steam last month, and have just launched the second title Backyard Soccer '98 earlier this week.

Given that efforts to translate the Saturn title Princess Crown into English stalled for over a decade, there's been a remarkable flurry of activity in this area in recent months.
SamIAm and Cyber Warrior X – two hackers who joined forces to translate the game back in 2012 – have recently resurrected their much-delayed project after an older, outdated version was forked by an individual named eadmaster.
It was confirmed that this new translation venture would be supported by MiYakuGaming in an attempt to make it the most faithful option.
It seems that eadmaster and MiYakuGaming have now parted ways, leading to a third Princess Crown translation project which will avoid censoring any of the text.
Speaking on social media...
Neo Byte Force, the developer behind the run-and-gun action shooter Cyborg Force, is releasing a new arcade-style single-screen platformer called Captain Barrel, for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, Sega Dreamcast, Neo Geo AES/MVS, and Neo Geo CD (thanks @DanteMendes!).
Physical versions of the game are currently sold out on the developer's store page — pre-orders opened earlier this year — but there's a demo now available to play on itch.io, and the developer has previously stated that it will eventually make the ROMs available for download, once it has finished shipping the physical copies.
In addition to this, the developer has said in the past that it will eventually be bringing it to the PSP, the Atari Jaguar, and potentially the...
Earthion is a new shmup for the Genesis / Mega Drive being developed by Yuzo Koshiro's Ancient, and it's coming out on the 16-bit system next year.
It's also due to launch on modern-day systems too, and we've just discovered that an arcade release is taking place via the exA-Arcadia platform.
A location test has taken place in Japan, and it would seen that the exA-Arcadia version is going to be superior to the home version.
"Unlike the Mega Drive version, there is no slowdown at all, and the system voices have been improved in quality and are easier to hear," says YouTuber Mitanix, who was lucky enough to go hands-on with the game at Amusement Expo 2024.
"Since it is a trial version, there are two endings, but I was unable to...
The folks over at Devolver Digital have very creative minds, as evidenced by the company's new strategy to inform prospective players of game delays. In August 2023, Devolver Delayed spoofed Nintendo Directs to announce five titles delayed until 2024. With that year nearing an end, it's the perfect time for another spoof with the 15th Annual Devolver Delayed Awards 2024. There are three delays this time around; unfortunately, two were already delayed last year. All three are now set to launch in 2025.
Devolver Digital describes Devolver Delayed Awards as "the only awards show recognizing those heroic developers with the courage and determination to delay their game into the next fiscal year." (It does take courage, no lies there.) This...
System 3 has revealed that it will publish a 40th-anniversary edition of the classic Archer Maclean title DropZone on Steam, Switch, PS5, and Xbox next month.
"On November 27th 1984, DropZone, the legendary Defender-style game from Archer Maclean, first took flight, captivating players across the globe," says the game's Steam page. "DropZone was widely regarded as the best Defender-style game on home computers and consoles, leaving a lasting mark on retro gaming history, inspiring generations of gamers, and setting the standard for its genre."
This new release is described as being "reimagined for fans both old and new and crafted from Archer's original source code" by developer Hashcode Digital and will feature "upgraded graphics...
We've been following Derek Pascarella's efforts to update Capcom vs. SNK 2 for a while now, and he's just revealed that his forthcoming translation patch will include some interesting bonus content.
The most interesting bonus feature is the ability to download a save file to your VMU which unlocks everything in the game.
You can also watch a Japanese TV commercial (with English subs).
Furthermore, @ItsFantasticAC has contributed translated interviews from the game's Japanese guide, which was released in 2001 but never made it out of Japan.
The content is tucked away in the game's main menu, in the spot that would normally be occupied by the now-dead "Network Mode".
This is shaping up to be a pretty significant patch, and one I...
The SuperSega project began so positively.
After all, who wouldn't want an FPGA-powered Sega super-console capable of playing Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn and Dreamcast games? A diehard Nintendo fan, perhaps, but there's no denying that Sega's legacy is one everyone should enjoy experiencing.
However, as the months have passed, the venture has become less and less appealing; the team behind the project has been curiously reluctant to show off what's powering its prototype boards which has predictably led to intense scepticism and one of the key figures behind it has even been accused of pulling similar stunts in the past to part people with their money.
Many who pledged to support the SuperSega project by handing over a small...
Hamster Corporation and the video game developer Success have struck a deal to bring the 1991 arcade title Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams to the Nintendo Switch and PS4 this week as part of Arcade Archives.
It will land on digital storefronts on November 28th and will mark the first time Success has released one of its own games as part of the long-running series of retro arcade reissues (thanks Famitsu!).
As mentioned Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams was originally released in the arcades in the early '90s, before being ported over to various other platforms like the PC-Engine Super CD-Rom²/TurboGrafx-CD, Sharp X68000, Sony PlayStation, the Neo Geo Pocket Color, and mobile phones. In addition to this, it was also the subject of a 2021...
Read-Only Memory and Thames & Hudson have announced a special evening to celebrate the release of WipEout Futurism: The Graphic Archives.
The event takes place at London's Loading Bar on Friday, the 20th of December, between 6:30 PM and 11:30 PM and will feature a live recording of Simon Parkin's excellent My Perfect Console podcast, with former Designers Republic staffer Michael C Place being the interviewee. The chat will delve into "the artistry, innovation, and legacy of WipEout."
It is also confirmed that some of the original WipEout developers will be in attendance, with additional speakers to be announced soon. Music from the iconic series will be played throughout the evening, and you'll be able to go hands-on with games, too...
Every new Wholesome Direct results in my game wishlist overflowing with cute and cozy games. Hovering around the top slots from the showcase's 2024 edition is Squeakross: Home Squeak Home. (It helps that I love pet rats, having had two pairs in the past: Cow, Pig, Leigh, and Zoe.) The puzzle-solving and home-decorating game is about you, a little mouse, playing nonograms to furnish your new home. While its full release is still a ways off (not to mention unannounced), players can get a taste of what's to come when a demo is released next month.
December's demo for Squeakross: Home Squeak Home puts you into the tiny shoes of a small rodent who needs to solve nonogram puzzles to unlock furniture, further enabling you to decorate your...
It would be hard to believe that the first title from a small indie developer — one about civilians suffering in a war-torn city — is still going strong ten years post-launch, except that is where This War of Mine finds itself. And it makes sense: I still pick it up and play sometimes, craving its narrative and strategic gameplay. Earlier this month, developer 11 bit studios revealed that DLC titled Forget Celebrations would be launching soon, as after a decade the game's message remains as important as ever. Today, it announced that Forget Celebrations will be released in mid-December. It also announced that the original soundtrack will be released on vinyl for the first time next year.
The DLC is titled Forget Celebrations for a...
Another beloved classic from the 5th Generation of videogame consoles is getting a native PC port. This time, the famous on-rails shooter for the Nintendo 64, Star Fox 64 (or Lylat Wars depending on the region), is getting a proper PC port made by the same developers that brought Ocarina of TIme to PC.
"Starship" is the codename given to the PC port of the game, made by the same people behind the Ship of Harkinian, specifically Sonic Dreamcaster and Samplywx, since they were the ones who worked on this specific PC port of Star Fox 64. The developers from Ship of Harkinian are now going by the name of Harbour Masters 64, and a few days ago, speedrunner Rakanai livestreamed a complete run of the game showcasing a beta of the native PC...
Given that many people watch movies and play video games, it should come as no great shock to learn that there's been plenty of marketing crossover between the two mediums over the decades.
While it's not as common now, once upon a time, every major Hollywood movie had its own tie-in video game, and today, consoles and games often get screen time in films – just like any other form of product placement.
Movies are definitely a valuable tool when it comes to getting recognition for your upcoming game, but it doesn't always work out the way it should – and 1995's Mallrats is a good example of that.
According to writer, director and View Askewniverse creator Kevin Smith, a scene in the movie was supposed to feature a Sega Genesis game...
