This underwent a big change recently, swapping in up-to-date ffmpeg code. The expectation would be that this would improve performance, however, that's up against the PS3 having a weak CPU like a 1990s Pentium 3.
It does H.264 decoding in hardware and doesn't seem to have difficulty with legacy codecs like Xvid (which is designed to have a low CPU footprint), however, even 480p x265 drops frames.
