A popular belief claims the SNES had better sound hardware than its competitor, the Genesis / Mega Drive. On paper, this seems true.

Nintendo's Sony-made sound chip can create amazing music and effects, while the Genesis' Yamaha YM2612 uses a more '80s-style FM sound. Both have pros and cons, but the usual story is that Sega's console came second in this area.

Well-known modder and homebrew coder @GabrielPyron recently challenged this view on social media. He pointed to @VTRCHIPMUSIC's impressive YM2612 version of the famous Super Castlevania IV song, Simon's Theme.

"What's great about the Mega Drive community now is we keep showing what the console can do, and YM2612 was fantastic," says GabrielPyron. "It only sounds bad when used by unskilled artists. Simon's theme from SuperCV4 by VTRCHIPMUSIC broke another myth."

This track – and others by VTRCHIPMUSIC – will be in the upcoming (unofficial) Genesis port of the game, called Mega Castlevania IV. You can hear more of the music below.
