Sandy White's Ant Attack was a groundbreaking release back in 1983.
Isometric games had already been seen in arcades, but to experience such a title on the humble ZX Spectrum – and one which gave the player the freedom of four-way movement – was revolutionary.
The gameplay was also notable, as many feel that Ant Attack laid the foundation of the 'survival horror' genre (it was also one of the earliest games in which the player could select their gender).
Incredibly, White never built on the game's legacy by producing a sequel, but now, over 40 years since its release, that's finally happening via the Spectrum Next, an FPGA-based successor to Clive Sinclair's legendary home micro.
Here, you can see White talking about the creation...
A native port of the Nintendo 64 game Star Fox 64 is currently in development for the PC (as spotted by PC Gamer).
The news was revealed over the weekend on the Harbour Masters 64 Discord — an online community of developers dedicated to bringing N64 games to PC — and was shown off shortly after in a stream from the Star Fox 64 speedrunner Rakanai. It is the work of Sonic Dreamcaster and Samplywx and is expected to launch sometime in December, with the port having just hit Beta.
On the live stream, which is now uploaded as a VOD on YouTube, Rakanai went over some of the exciting new features that are coming to the in-development port, such as support for higher framerates, full controller mapping, and the ability to disable LOD (to...
The talented modder who gave Saturn Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII and Crash Bandicoot has pulled off the same trick with Shenmue to celebrate 30 years of Saturn.
Frogbull has put together a facsimile of the Dreamcast classic on Sega's 32-bit console, which is impressive in itself – but fans of the series will be aware that there's a historical connection to this, too.
Yu Suzuki and his team at AM2 initially prototyped the game on Saturn in 1996 before development was shifted to the more powerful Dreamcast in 1997. Initially entitled The Old Man and the Peach Tree, the tech demo would evolve into a Virtua Fighter RPG before it eventually became the epic quest for revenge we know and love today.
Sega would include footage of...
With the Nintendo Switch being such a runaway success, and having a successor console on the way, it looks like an old rival might be throwing their hat back into the ring. An insider report from Bloomberg states that Sony is looking to contend in the portable gaming market, and thus, are in the early stages of creating a new handheld device. Supposedly, the concept builds upon the PlayStation Portal, but would, "function as a standalone device like Valve Corp.'s Steam Deck". Bloomberg notes that the release of such a PlayStation-branded handheld would be "years away", or could never be fully realized.

When people tend to discuss the most difficult Sierra adventure games, there is one name that usually comes up more than any other: Codename: Iceman.
Released for DOS, Atari ST, and Amiga, the Sierra point-and-click adventure was designed by Jim Walls — a former police officer who had previously helped create the Police Quest series — and was notorious for its challenging mini-games, unwinnable situations, and its frustrating emphasis on military and medical procedures and protocols (listed in its manual).
As a result, it doesn't tend to command the same amount of fondness as Sierra's other famous series like King's Quest, Space Quest, and Gabriel Knight, instead often finding itself as the butt of various community in-jokes.
A good...
The Dreamcast may have been Sega's final stab in the world of gaming hardware, but the company really threw everything at making the console a success – including features like online connectivity, memory cards you could play games on and the ability to hook the system up via VGA for a sharper picture.
If you were lucky enough to have experienced a Dreamcast running via VGA back in the day, it was akin to the leap to HD we'd see a few years later – it just looked incredible, even compared to RGB SCART. This feature is also responsible for a cool hidden secret, which has recently been unearthed by engineer and Romhacker Derek Pascarella, who is currently working on a translation patch for Capcom vs. SNK 2.
The oddity relates to the...
If you owned a C64 back in the day, then you might be familiar with Summer Camp (1990) and Winter Camp (1992), two titles published by Thalamus and coded by the late John D. Ferrari.
Ferrari was already something of a legend in C64 circles at this point, having produced The Human Race and Hollywood or Bust. However, his two sports games created a new legion of fans, thanks in no small part to the introduction of Maximus Mouse, a cute mascot character.
Given that Ferrari was working in an era where many C64 games were sold at "budget" prices, it should come as no great shock to learn that he wasn't drowning in cash. "John Ferrari was my dad, and can I just say how hard he worked on all of his games, and in them days for very little...
Ocean Software's 1991 Commodore 64 port of TAD Corporation's run 'n gun arcade platformer Toki is getting an unofficial fan remaster, it's been announced.
Davide Bottino — a pixel artist, game creator, and retro journalist for Zzap! Italia — is behind the remaster of the port and has recently been sharing some incredible new footage of it in action over on his Twitter, posting a first test featuring some of the newly updated character sprites.
Bottino has been working on the remaster now for 20 months and originally announced his plans to work on a remaster of the Commodore 64 version back in February 2023 on the Lemon64 forums.
At that time, he called the original port from Ocean Software "a decent and above average conversion for...
The i-Mode port of Sega's arcade classic OutRun has just been preserved, according to the feature phone preservationist RockmanCosmo.
The announcement was made over on BlueSky and Twitter, where RockmanCosmo stated that an individual named Yuu had managed to dump the game (using the debug cable method outlined here) from a Taiwanese F905i phone, along with another i-Mode title — a Shadow the Hedgehog auto-scroller named Shadow Shoot.
Both games were originally released via Sega's Sonic Cafe service, which was a Japan-exclusive mobile service active from 2001 to 2007, with OutRun landing on the service back in 2001 while Shadow Shoot arrived 5 years later in 2006.

I admit, I might have a slight obsession with Urban Myth Dissolution Center, which launches in February 2025. It sounds wonderful: the publisher describes it as a single-player psycho-detective mystery adventure that has a unique blend of psychological intrigue and supernatural investigation. It is split into episodes/chapters, and the latest trailer showcases what comes in Episode 2: Death from the Reflection. A paranormal video from a shady property… what could go wrong?
Azami Fukurai is at the centre (ha) of Urban Myth Dissolution Center. She can see others' intentions and residual thoughts through her glasses, making her the perfect choice to work at the titular centre. The company's specialty is onsite and online adaptive research...
This month is a special one for Donkey Kong Country, marking the 30th anniversary of the game's release across several regions.
So, to celebrate, a group of ROM hackers has got together to create three new ROM hacks for those who consider themselves experts at the game, which are all inspired by unlockable modes from later Donkey Kong Country releases.
The first of these hacks, Challenge Edition, is influenced by the hidden difficulty mode from Donkey Kong Country 2, which was activated in that game by using a cheat code. It removes the game's DK barrels and warp barrels, making it impossible to bring back lost characters and perform level skips. The second, meanwhile, called Expert Edition, does all of the above but also takes its...

D4 Enterprise has revealed that it will be bringing Bothtec's sidescrolling action RPG The Scheme to Nintendo Switch next week, on November 28th, 4Gamer reports.
The rerelease will be part of D4 Enterprise's ongoing EGGCONSOLE series, which is a collection of retro reissues that are based on games that were originally launched for classic Japanese computers (like the PC-88 and MSX). These games are often unlocalized but typically come packaged along with an English main menu and a "How to Play" section to provide tips for Western players, unfamiliar with Japanese, on getting started.
Just to give you some background on The Scheme, in case you're interested in giving it a go, it was originally released for the PC-88 back in 1988, and...
In a recent AMA on YouTube, the former Rare composer Grant Kirkhope gave some insight into the making of Rare Treats: Donkey Kong 64 Revisited — his upcoming remix album that will see him rearranging classic tracks from his original Nintendo 64 soundtrack for Donkey Kong 64. This included an explanation for why he decided to exclude several tracks from the album, with the musician referring to the licensing situation as "tricky".
In case you've not been following along with the announcements so far, Kirkhope first revealed that he was working on the celebration album back in August. As he shared back then, it is being made in collaboration with the Materia Collective, and will also feature some original cover art from the Diddy Kong...
Activision's Deadpool game has just received a mysterious Steam 7 years after it was delisted from the service, according to the third party website SteamDB. And it's not alone either.
As spotted by the Twitter user @Knoebelbroet, who originally broke the news (before it was picked up by sites like GamesRadar), six other games also received an update, including three Transformers titles (Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, Transformers: War for Cybertron, and Transformers Devastation), Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2, and Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions.
The update history states that on November 14th each of these titles added a new store screenshot, but, as we said, the store pages for these games are no longer publicly available, so...

The film will be distributed in those regions by by Uncork'd Entertainment, with the president of the distributor Keith Leopard, telling the horror website it is "honored to bring George A. Romero's Resident Evil to fans who have long awaited the untold story behind this legendary, unmade project."
Since we last wrote about the film back in March 2023, it should be noted that there have been a further two trailers for the film that we seemed to miss at the time, offering...
Sony's remote play device will be getting cloud play support soon, following the announcement of a new beta release of the Portal's system software. If you're subscribed to PlayStation Plus's Premium tier and have a PS Portal, you'll be able to trial out game streaming on the device, allowing you to play a catalog of PS5 games off of PlayStation's servers. There are some specific limits for the beta period, as streaming PS4 games is unsupported for now, and a handful of other features won't work.

Popular Nintendo DS emulator melonDS has seen some major additions in a brand new release. Making the milestone jump from the previous v0.9.5, this new version is v1.0, though it has the caveat of being a "Release Candidate", according to the developer, as the variety of changes might bring about unforeseen bugs. A lot of notable changes have been made--namely a revamped OpenGL renderer that balances accuracy with upscaling, proper LAN local multiplayer, multi-window support, and more. A detailed breakdown of all these changes can be viewed on the official melonDS page, with the 1.0 RC release download link.
