New Australian studio, Weforge Studio, has launched a Kickstarter for its first title, the very promising-looking "stealth extraction horror" game, Macabre.

The developer is aiming for a 2025 release, and there's a solid concept behind it, if you're one of those people that enjoy your multiplayer horror experiences.

"Trapped within a Rift of Endless Timelines, you and up to three friends are relentlessly pursued by a shapeshifting horror known only as MACABRE. This interdimensional terror meticulously assesses each player to determine if you're a threat or potential prey. As it becomes familiar with your tactics, any predictability on your part will prompt Macabre to adapt, forcing you to innovate or face dire consequences," the press release states.

"Macabre demands stealth, cunning, and sharp wits. Choose to work together and face Macabre as one, or betray your teammates and claim the lion's share of the loot. Just know Macabre preys on those who stray from the pack!"

The development team have some serious pedigree behind them, including Jake Hempson, the art director that cut his teeth on the classic Alien Vs. Predator.

As you can tell from the trailer, there's a suitably grim atmosphere to the gameplay, with plenty of jump scares and horrible visions. What I like most, however, is how Australian the voice over is. I do hope that this is a part of the quality of the game itself, and not just the promo. As we saw from the recently-released Broken Roads, leaning into the Australian qualities of games developed here is a good thing.

The developers are looking for $85,000 from Kickstarter to be able to go full time on the project and really drive it home. Given that one of the award tiers includes a pet cockatoo companion pet, I'm quite certain they'll hit the goal.

You can back it here.
