The Sonic fanbase and both its romhacking and homebrew community are some of the most active ones out there, and each year they hold contests to showcase whatever projects the fanbase is currently working on, be it directly related to the Sonic franchise, or entirely new indie projects inspired by it, in either the Sonic Hacking Contest (SHC) or the Sonic Amateur Games Expo (SAGE), with the showcasing also indie titles as well.

Some homebrew developers from the community have made entire recreations of certain games from the franchise, like the well known Project 06 which recreates most of Sonic 06's content, alongside a lot of new gameplay features and quality of life changes, and others like a remake of Sonic 3D Blast for PC. This time, another game from the 3D era of Sonic is being recreated by developer KumaPauZ (or KumaPaus) for SAGE 2024, with the title in question being "Sonic and the Secret Rings", which was originally released for the Nintendo Wii back in 2007.

KumaPaus has recreated the basics of Sonic and the Secret Rings in the Godot Engine, and has just released a demo showcasing the very first two stages of the game, Sand Oasis and Dino Jungle, alongside all of their missions. Additionally, the demo also features 30 skills and an experience system as well.

According to KumaPaus, Project Reignition "aims to bring Secret Rings to modern standards by providing Standard Controller Support, Updated Visuals, and Improved Gameplay". The visuals for the game have been recreated from scratch, and some missions will contain new visuals and music to help against the repetitiveness of the original game.

Those interested in trying out Project Reignition can do so by visiting the Sonic Fan Games HQ website and visiting the Project Reignition showcase page, with both Windows and Linux/Steam Deck versions available. Sonic fans can also check out the currently on-going (until September 13th) SAGE 2024 website for even more Sonic or Sonic related content, as well as some other original content too by the community.
