WipEout turns 30 next year, and the celebrations are already underway – but how about an official Lego set to really kick things off? That's what could potentially happen, as a fan has submitted a kit design to Lego's Ideas portal, where fan-made projects have a chance of being turned into legitimate products. "Ever since my first encounter with the game on PlayStation 1 in 1997, I've been captivated by the mesmerizing ship designs featured in the Wipeout series," says Bryan77233. "I had a lot of fun creating this project, gathering inspiration from both Studio Liverpool's official concept art, and fan-made illustrations." Based on the iconic FEISAR FX400, the kit idea comprises 1905 parts and weighs 1.8 kg (64.7 oz). "While my...
Nintendo is famously protective of its intellectual property and has a history of suing content creators who it feels have overstepped the mark. However, its latest move feels particularly heavy-handed, as it has issued a copyright strike against a YouTube channel that reviews emulation handhelds. Retro Game Corps, in case you didn't know, is an excellent channel with over half a million subscribers which covers many different retro gaming systems, but its main focus is modern-day portable devices from the likes of AYANEO, Anbernic and Retroid which are capable of emulating classic games from yesteryear. As you might imagine, many of these systems run games for consoles like the NES, SNES, Game Boy, N64 and even Wii U, and the...
We've seen a sudden outburst of affection for classic fighting games recently, helped in no small part by Capcom's efforts to revive its '90s titles for a new audience. You'd assume there would be just as much demand for a collection related to Namco's legendary Tekken series, but franchise director Katsuhiro Harada has poured cold water on such hopes. Speaking to the TheGamer alongside designer Michael Murray, Harada says he doesn't think there's the same kind of desire for old 3D fighting games as there is for 2D ones: Murray does give a little more hope but is still skeptical that older Tekken games would be much fun to play today: What do you think? Do 3D fighting games really age worse than 2D ones? Would you be willing to pay...
WeskMods is very close to finalising his unofficial Sega Saturn Slim modification. The mod is described as "all but complete" and will offer support for the Fenrir internal ODE. It will also support the Satiator and Saroo, although the latter will require the cartridge slot to be repositioned, but this is now optional. "The provisions for relocation still exist if you're up for the challenge, but if not, the cart port cover really adds to the design overall," says WeskMods. "The icing on the cake is ArielAces working on super detailed decals and stickers for the final unit," he adds. "I should have all the parts for the final assembly in the coming weeks."
If you've been floating around the forum in the past year, AKNES might be a name you recognise, having supported users with their controller woes and given away a number of controllers and accessories. Earlier this year they moved most of their day to day operations over to Discord, and are today launching a new reviewer development program based on feedback and discussions within the community. As both a reseller and an avenue of testing and support for brands including 8BitDo, GuliKit, and RetroFlag, amongst others, AKNES plans to offer product samples over a period of six months to help new creators get into the reviewing space. Applying for the program will require you join the AKNES Discord server and submit a review of anything...
Square Enix has released a series of die-cast, scale-model versions of some of Sega's most famous video game consoles. Part of the company's "Bright Arts" series, each one is "crafted in great detail and [has] a heavy, impressive presence," according to the company. "The controller is also included, making it a great interior decoration item." Six items are included in the range. You've got the Mega Drive (Japanese), Saturn (Japanese), white Saturn (Japanese) and Dreamcast (Japanese / North America), as well as the North American Genesis and the European Dreamcast. Retailing for 4,400 yen ($30) each, they launch in Japan on January 25th, 2025. Square Enix's Bright Arts range also includes Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and Shin...
Developer Truant Pixel has shown off its upcoming arcade space combat title Rogue Flight, which appears to take a generous amount of inspiration from classic on-rail blasters like Star Fox. Boasting a "retro 80's-90's analogue-video art style" which is "inspired by the golden age of prestige anime", Rogue Flight will offer "stylish high-speed arcade action set across 9 unique stages" and a "branching narrative path with multiple endings." You'll be able to pull off high-risk maneuvers and get to grips with multiple weapon options, and there will be "over 100" unlockable liveries so you can personalize your craft. Furthermore, the game will offer an arcade mode as well as "unlockable roguelite game modes which offer greater risks...
If you missed out on the Kickstarter for PixelHeart's Ghosts 'N Goblins-esque platformer GladMort earlier this year, and have been kicking yourself ever since, then we have some good news for you. Last Friday, the publisher launched a bunch of pre-order options on its website, giving players the chance to secure copies of the game for the Neo Geo & Sega Dreamcast ahead of its official launch later this year. Gladmort, in case you're in need of a quick refresher, is a brand new title, developed by the Neotris developer Chips on Steroids, and a small team comprised of the artists Jérome Lignier and Lionel Pigaglio and the musician Stef Sirrah. It follows a story about a kingdom besieged by undead monsters who, in a last-ditch effort...
If you've been following the development of the upcoming Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, then you'll be aware that the late Akira Toriyama's artwork has been updated for this new release, with female characters generally showing less skin than before. The character that has been impacted the most is the female Warrior, who now wears clothing underneath her (admittedly revealing) armored bikini. Speaking at the recent Tokyo Game Show, series creator Yuji Horii and former Shonen Jump editor Kazuhiko Torishima (a key figure in the inception of the first game) touched upon the delicate topic of censorship in a surprisingly candid exchange. The conversion has been translated by Valute News, and sees Horii admit that he is confused as to...
After 36 years, Namco's gory 1988 arcade beat 'em up Splatterhouse is finally coming to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis port, via an unofficial fan port. Monster Bath Games, the developer of games like Deathwish Enforcers and Guardgrave, recently announced over the weekend that it had taken a 2-week break from working on its own titles to experiment with creating a fanmade port of an arcade title to Sega Mega Drive / Genesis using @earok's Scorpion Engine. For this, it decided to opt for Splatterhouse, a game that was previously ported to the PC Engine/Turbo Grafx-16 and FM-Towns computer in the early 90s. This game skipped the Sega console at the time, with only its sequels Splatterhouse 2 and Splatterhouse 3 getting an official release...
A new Atelier Resleriana game was announced at TGS Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy & the Polar Night Liberator is a first for the Atelier franchise: it is free-to-play. It fell into the trap that many mobile games do: too much of one thing, not enough of another. So I raised an eyebrow at the announcement of Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian — but it is described as "completely offline" so that could imply it is a normal, premium Atelier game. It remains to be seen. Not a lot has been revealed about this new title, but here is the official description so far: "A new RPG from the Atelier series. A new adventure with new protagonists and an original story in the world of Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten...
In the years since its release Pokemon Emerald has received a lot of attention. Outside of being beloved by fans of the series, there have been people attempting to beat the game with any number of ridiculous conditions, all while sticking to the vanilla game. The creativity of the larger community has always stood out, seeing the game tackled without Pokemon Centers, through various nuzlocke challenges, and with any number of unusual Pokemon choices. What have I never seen in Pokemon Emerald though? An incredibly inefficient file system. MON-FS is here to solve a problem nobody has ever had, and enables you to store a colossal 3.5kb of data in the PC of your Pokemon Emerald save. The principle here is nothing revolutionary, but the...
City Connection has announced that the next three Jaleco titles coming to Nintendo Switch, as part of its 'JALECOlle Famicom Edition' series, will be Saiyūki World, Magic John, and Pizza Pop! The announcement was made just a couple of days ago across both City Connection's social media and official website, though no date has been given just yet as to when these titles will become available for players to buy. Saiyūki World (1988), in case you're unfamiliar with it, is a Japan-exclusive action-adventure RPG based on Wonder Boy in Monster Land and inspired by the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. It was developed by Westone (the developers of Wonder Boy in Monster Land) and sees players take control of Sun Wukong (also...
Here's some news no one particularly expected — FreakZone Games (the developers of Angry Video Game Nerd 1 & 2 Deluxe) and Metal X Entertainment (a subsidiary of BitBotMedia) are adapting the cult classic horror musical Rocky Horror Picture Show into a retro-style platformer that is coming to Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation next month, just in time for Halloween (thanks TheWrap!). The unexpected adaptation will see players "running, jumping, and dancing" through Doctor Frank-N-Furter's mansion as characters from the musical and 1975 film (including Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott), with the gameplay described as a mixture of classic NES titles like DuckTales and Castlevania. It will also incorporate various chiptune...
Programmer and Jaguar fan Rich Whitehouse – who is also Head of Digital Conservation The Video Game History Foundation – has revealed that his iOS Jaguar emulator is almost ready for public release. Whitehouse showed off a screenshot of the emulator in action, running the iconic Tempest 2000, one of the console's most beloved games. He has also confirmed that the release is very close indeed. "[There's] still lots of work to be done," he says on Twitter. "But I'm hoping to have this ready to go sometime next month." We've seen a flood of retro game emulators appear on iOS since Apple relaxed its stance a few months ago. Multi-system emulator Delta is arguably the most famous, but we've also had individual emulators for Saturn, 3DS...
The Tetris Company and the Japanese developer Arika have announced that they've reached an agreement for a new Tetris The Grand Master game. The news was shared via an English and Japanese press release, published earlier today (September 27th), and states that the project will introduce new ideas based on the concept of "Tetris that makes [you] good at Tetris." Beyond that, very little else was revealed about the title, except that it is currently scheduled to be released during the fiscal year 2024, which is slated to end in March 2025. Just to give a brief bit of history, Arika's Tetris The Grand Master was first released in arcades in 1998, with the goal of the project being to introduce a greater layer of difficulty and...
The world is becoming increasingly digital when it comes to the media we consume. Streaming has reduced sales of music and movies dramatically, and games are headed the same way; over 90% of the games sold in the UK are digital. Digital media has many positive aspects when it comes to video games. You can purchase a game directly through your console or computer without having to leave the house or wait for it to be delivered physically. You also don't have to swap discs or cartridges whenever you want to play a game, which is good news for those of us who tend to lose or misplace things (or are just plain lazy). However, as many people are keen to point out, you don't actually own digital games, and a new Californian law will ensure...
Sony's recent State of Play broadcast gave us many pleasant surprises, but as retro gamers and lovers of classic JRPGs, the news that the PS1 versions of Lunar and its sequel are getting remasters was very welcome indeed. Developed by GungHo, Lunar Remastered Collection is coming to PS5, PS4, Switch and Xbox Series X/S, and updates Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete for a new generation. In case you didn't know, both games were originally released on the Sega CD and were updated for Sony's 32-bit hardware over 20 years ago. The Western versions of the games were localized by Working Designs, a North American company founded by Victor Ireland that specialized in bringing over Japanese RPGs. John...
Riley Testut, the developer of the popular multi-system Delta emulator for iOS, has revealed that Nintendo DS online multiplayer is coming to the app. Testut broke the welcome news by showing off a video of a Mario Kart DS online race on Threads. As he explains to The Verge, the online features are powered by melonDS' online support, "which connects to 3rd-party Nintendo [Wi-Fi Connection] servers (such as Kaeru, Wimmfi, AltWFC, etc)." This means over 10 million Delta users will be able to play with other Delta users, as well as players using authentic DS hardware connected to the same 3rd-party Nintendo WFC servers. All Nintendo DS games with Nintendo WFC are supported, according to Testut. Given that the online servers for the DS...
