Update [Tue 20th Aug, 2024 11:35 BST]: Mauro Xavier has offered an updated look at his latest Mega Drive / Genesis project, Driftin' Rage in an exciting new video uploaded to his YouTube channel.
The video shows an extended look at the stylish vehicle selection screen, as well as some direct gameplay featuring one of the selectable motorbikes, the Brazuka, facing off against 7 other competitors on one of the game's courses.
On the subject of courses, recently Xavier shared a tweet that seems to list the 12 locations that will be included in the finished game, writing that "the time has come to program the tracks with the right weather, behavior, and consistent graphics". According to the list, these tracks will include the following...
The retro gaming "mad scientist" BillyTime!Games has released his latest Mega Drive / Genesis ROM hack and this time he is focusing on giving an exciting overhaul to the beloved action "roguelike" classic Toejam & Earl.
Originally released in 1991, Toejam & Earl sees up to two players taking control of a pair of alien rappers who have crash landed on a bunch of floating islands representing Earth.
Players have to travel from one island to the next via special elevators, with the ultimate goal of the game being to collect all the pieces of wreckage from their ship and make their escape. This will involve avoiding a bunch of bizarre enemies, like possessed mailboxes, angry hamsters, and ice cream trucks, as well as occasionally picking...
Hitoshi Iizawa, a programmer credited with Ryu ga Gotoku Studio's Sega Model 2 / Model 3 emulation efforts across the Yakuza / Like A Dragon series and Lost Judgment, is set to receive an excellence award for engineering at CEDEC — Japan's largest conference for computer entertainment developers.
The Lost Judgement director Yutaka Ito shared the news yesterday on Twitter (where it was later brought to our attention via Gosokkyu).
On the website, CEDEC praised "the expertise and uniqueness of the efforts to reproduce games for dedicated arcade hardware at the dawn of 3DCG games" and commended the programmer for bringing these titles to the attention of today's gamers.
To coincide with the announcement, Ito shared a brief insight...
Bloober Team has asked fans of the PS2 classic Silent Hill 2 to give it a chance, as it looks to remake what's considered to be one of the greatest horror games ever made. The fanaticals' fears are based on the studio's previous titles (Layers of Fear, The Medium), where it's been accused of poorly handling sensitive themes the very game it's remaking revolve around. Those concerns are warranted, but having played three hours of the PS5 version's introductory sequence, the studio deserves the chance to make its case. Silent Hill 2 on PS5 is different to how it was 23 years ago, but that does not mean it's bad. It's quite the opposite in fact: Bloober Team and Konami have a new vision for the game, and the opening hours show a great deal...
GOG has revealed that Resident Evil 2 will be arriving on the digital storefront later this month on August 27th. It follows the release of the "completely uncut" PC version of Resident Evil on the storefront earlier this year in June.
Resident Evil 2 will be available to buy individually or as part of a digital bundle that will also contain the first and third games in the series (the latter of which has still yet to be released on the storefront). This bundle is currently priced at £20.99, while the individual cost of the second and third games has yet to be announced (the first game was sold for £8.99).
Much like GOG's release of the first Resident Evil game, Resident Evil 2 will also include various tweaks and improvements to...
In its latest update, the workbench setup AmigaVision has introduced Amiga CD32 support for MiSTer.
The exciting news was announced in a blog post on AmigaVision's website and now means that you can boot CD³² disc images (in either CHD or bin/cue formats) on MiSTer, directly from the launcher.
AmigaVision, in case you've never heard of it, is an open-source, community-driven Amiga games & demo scene setup for MiSTer & Pocket FPGAs, emulators, and real Amiga hardware.
The Amiga CD32, on the other hand, is a console that was released in Europe in 1993 and featured a similar specification to the Amiga 1200. It came with a gamepad as well as a CD drive, allowing games to feature FMV cutscenes, CD-quality music, and voice acting...
The New 8-Bit Heroes's director Joe Granato revealed that the popular NES development software NESmaker will soon be changing its name to Retro Game Forge and will also be adding support for SNES development.
NESMaker, in case you're unaware, is a software development tool that currently costs $36 to download and provides a suite of tools and editors for creating original NES games. It's been used to develop a large number of homebrew NES games in the past — many of which are available to play online via the virtual arcade The Retro Verse.
In a recent direct, however, Granato announced that the software will soon become more platform agnostic, being capable of assisting with the development of games for other consoles such as the...
The only original game Sega developed for the PS1 has just got a new fan translation hack from Hilltop, OldGameBox, and Cargodin.
Mini-Moni. Shakatto Tambourine! da Pyon! is a 2002 Samba De Amigo style rhythm game starring the Japanese pop group Mini Moni and featuring songs from Mini-Moni and another girl group named Morning Musume. It is part of the Shakatto Tambourine! series, which originally started in the arcades, and notably features a tambourine-style controller in place of Samba De Amigo's maracas.
Mini-Moni. Shakatto Tambourine! da Pyon! is the only game in the series to carry the Mini-Moni theming, with the other titles featuring a wider variety of music from a selection of Japanese pop acts.
Bizarrely, the Shakatto...
Infidelity, the ROM hacker and porting specialist behind SNES conversions of Metroid, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Punch-Out!! has recently completed yet another classic project — this time transferring Super Mario Bros from the NES to the SNES.
The news was announced over the weekend and perhaps more excitingly also came with the reveal of an alternative version featuring a SNES-based custom level editor named Super Mario Bros. Maker, which will enable players to edit the game's levels.
In order to edit levels, players simply have to press X when they start a new game and they will then be able to select, copy, or paste any 16x16 block that appears at the top of the screen with either an SNES controller in port 1, or an SNES mouse in...

Leave rural life behind in Cat Café Manager 2: Big City Bliss
Roost Games has announced a sequel to the excellent and adorable Cat Café Manager. You're leaving town life behind for something bigger in Cat Café 2: Big City Bliss. The cozy management sim brings you to a folkloric city filled to the brim with secrets and strays (cats). This is where you'll build the cat café of your dreams! The game's heart remains the same as its predecessor's but Cat Café Manager 2: Big City Bliss has a new look inspired by Studio Ghibli, '90s...
Big tech wants you to know that the future of computing is wearable and on your face. They don't know the exact shape or form it will take but the "next" computing device they are chasing is a pair of smart glasses of sorts. Nevermind the Google Glass hiccup or Meta's billions in losses as it vehemently pushes for the smart glasses of the future to access the metaverse or whatever new buzzword it wants to name itself after. Even Apple has launched the pricey Vision Pro to state its commitment in this sphere and has reportedly a more affordable variant in the works. The message they are sending is clear: the future - or the future they want - involves smart glasses, no matter the cost.
With such big names competing in the smart glasses...
It's Only Money is an upcoming third-person open-world game inspired by the likes of GTA, Bully and The Simpsons: Hit & Run from developers Usual Suspects. After a period of Early Access, the game is set for a full release in a few months' time.
It's Only Money will be exiting Early Access for a full release on Steam on October 14th. A new demo for the game is currently available which offers around 45-60 minutes of gameplay.
The Spanish team behind the upcoming SuperSega FPGA system have revealed that it will be offered in two different hardware variants – and says it understands why the platform has been met with such a high degree of skepticism.
The FPGA-based machine will be capable of playing original Mega Drive / Genesis, Master System, SC-3000, SG-1000, Saturn and Dreamcast games thanks to its Virtex Ultrascale+ FPGA chip.
The SuperSega team hasn't explained exactly what the two models will be, however, short of making a casual comparison to the Master System and the Master System Plus, two SKUs of Sega's 8-bit console. The latter included two controllers and Sega's Light Phaser, so perhaps the plan is to include additional accessories – such as a...
It's been a while since Sega released a brand-new arcade racing game, so in the meantime, we've had to rely on indie developers to fill the void, with titles like Super Polygon GP and Over Jump Rally springing to mind.
Dangerous Derk Interactive (DDI) is a small UK-based studio which is doing its best to add to this wave of Sega tributes, and has two games which pay homage to the Japanese company's coin-op racers.
DDI Rally Championship is available now and costs £9.99. It's a SEGA Rally-infused racing title with five different cars, five tracks, dynamic time and weather and (perhaps best of all) Steam Deck support.
Here's some more PR:
DDI's other game is the upcoming Super Retro GP, which is inspired by the classic Virtua...
The SNES had several cool visual tricks up its sleeve, one of which was transparent effects, which looked nothing short of remarkable back in the early '90s.
Rival machines, like the Genesis / Mega Drive, used a technique known as dithering transparency (or screen-door transparency) to make objects appear transparent, but the SNES was capable of achieving this effect in a far more convincing manner.
Along with its Mode 7 effects, transparency was one of the key talking points when debates between Sega and Nintendo fans occurred, but in 2024, we're pleased to report that industrious homebrew coders have succeeded in replacing the same effect on the Genesis / Mega Drive.
Shannon Birt, taking a break from working on the amazing-looking...
Chris P Ville, the developer behind the FlippyDrive ODE, has created another GameCube mod – a special receiver which connects four WaveBirds to your console without the need for the original receivers.
In case you didn't know, the WaveBird wireless controller uses a special RF receiver which plugs into the GameCube's controller port. FlippyBird will remove the need to have four of these connected when playing with four WaveBirds.
"[It] installs internally with auto-wired controller passthrough, can be used standalone via USB, solderless, config-via-controller so you never see it," explains Ville. "Should be cost competitive vs a single OEM receiver."
Connecting a controller appears to be pretty straightforward. "Current scheme...
Next month will see the release of Beyond Shadowgate, a sequel to the classic NES dungeon crawler, across Steam and GOG on September 19th.
The project, which was originally crowdfunded on Kickstarter last year, has no similarities to the 1993 Turbografx CD sequel that featured a third-person point-and-click perspective. But is instead a more traditional first-person follow-up, similar to the original "Macventure" and its various ports, including Kemco's popular 1989 NES port.
According to the original Kickstarter campaign video, the game is based on an undeveloped 34-year-old design doc that was abandoned when its original ICOM Simulations began to focus less on original projects and more on licensed properties like Road Runner's...
The Cleve Carney Museum of Art in Chicago is set to hold an exhibit, which starts later this year, telling the history of the arcade developer Midway.
Insert Coin: Inside Midway's Arcade Revolution will be open from October 26th, 2024 to February 16th, 2025, and will cost $12, with discounts available for students, seniors, and military personnel.
The exhibit will include 15 playable games that will communicate the story of the iconic company that was responsible for classic titles like Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam. It will also feature interviews with former Midway designers and behind-the-scenes videos, art, and other ephemera from the development.
The exhibit is organized by the documentary filmmaker and director of innovation at...
Sticky Business launched in August 2023, and to date is the developer's only title to have launched. (It has, however, received some updates and two DLC packs. The Camp Zinnias DLC launched today.) One year later, I am still playing the game – as recently as a few hours ago. The cozy sticker sim is enchanting and long-lasting, but what has the developer been up to otherwise? Today, Spellgarden Games and Team17 Digital announced Ritual of Raven, a cozy farming sim with a magical story and a dash of adventure. It is also enchanting but in a whole new way! The cozy part isn't unexpected. But it sounds like Spellgarden Games is keeping up with its creativity, cooking up something new for farming!
Ritual of Raven is set in a world where...
Classic arcade racing games might have fallen out of favor somewhat in recent times, but that doesn't mean developers have completely ignored them – as the existence of Perfect Lap proves.
Created by Majestic Technology, it's described as a mix between Auto Modellista And Ridge Racer Type 4, and is headed to Steam in the not-too-distant future.
Combining the former's cel-shaded look with the latter's tight controls, this could well turn out to be something of a winner for fans of this genre.
The developer has shared various videos of the game's development but is keen to stress that it remains a work in progress:
