Today's Future Games Show was presented by Sid Meier's Civilization VII and I since didn't post about the highly anticipated title yesterday, now seems like an appropriate time to put all the information together! Yesterday brought two new trailers (one is a gameplay reveal and the other is a narrator reveal), information about various editions that will be available, and – most importantly – the game's launch date! There was also a gameplay showcase live stream. The Future Games Show featured two segments with themed developer interviews, Building the World and Gameplay. That means five videos of Sid Meier's Civilization VII greatness in just the last two days, so it's time to get excited!
Your decisions will shape the cultural...
While there can be some variation, video game previews are generally handled in one of two different ways: we're either left to our own devices whilst playing or a developer will sit alongside us acting as a guide. The former is preferred, but sometimes, the latter can be handled with such genuine care and passion that you stay longer than your schedule lets you just to hear a creator wax lyrical about their project. In a private room off of the Gamescom showfloor, we had that special experience with Charles Cecil of Broken Sword fame.
He and Revolution Software are remastering the point-and-click series' first entry Shadow of the Templars, and to hear of the love being poured into this new PS5 version was a complete and utter joy. It...
Samsung's Odyssey 3D gaming monitor range has just been revealed at Gamescom, and it sure does remind us of a certain Nintendo handheld (thanks, The Verge).
The series uses eye-tracking technology and a lenticular lens to create the illusion of 3D-depth – a more elaborate take on the concept Nintendo pioneered with its 3DS console over a decade ago.
The difference here is that the tracking tech is a lot more advanced (even more so than the head-tracking system that was present in the New 3DS refresh), allowing the display to constantly check the position of the user's eyes to ensure the image remains rock-solid. It will also operate perfectly fine as a 2D screen.
Here's what Samsung has to say about the screen:

If you're a fan of the long-running Densha de Go series and you happen to own a Playdate, then you'll almost certainly want to keep an eye on the upcoming Zero Zero: Perfect Stop, which is being developed by Hunter Bridges, the director of Penny's Big Breakaway and a programmer on Sonic Mania.
The system exclusive uses the Playdate's crank to control the train's speed, and Bridges has recently revealed that he's aiming for even more authenticity by including the vocal talents of Tokyo-based Australian singer and voice actress Donna Burke.
Burke has worked in the realm of video games and anime for some time and became involved with the Metal Gear franchise with Peace Walker, for which she supplied the vocals to the song Heavens...
Jason Wilson (also known as Jay Gunn) – who worked as an artist and designer on the MediEvil franchise – has been digging into his archives recently, unearthing some concept artwork for an untitled FPS which would have struck the whole "UK is under attack by aliens" vibe a short time before Resistance: Fall of Man arrived on PS3 in 2006.
"Tidying up and rummaging through the game concept archives and found some 20-year-old drawings that I did for storyboard presentation concepts for an Untitled (not produced) Sony 1st person UK set alien invasion first-person shooter," says Wilson on social media, before noting that this was well before the thematically-similar Resistance: Fall of Man was released.
As well as being heavily involved...
Grimace's Birthday developer, Gumpy Function, has just launched a new Game Boy game entitled Unearthed.
"Set in a future where humanity has all but depleted Earth's resources, UNEARTHED invites you on an interstellar journey with Max - a husband, father and employee of the off-planet mining corporate juggernaut 'Deep Space Mineral Retrieval'," says the game's itch.io page.
"Pilot your DSMR issued Mech to delve into the depths of planets, navigate perilous caverns and solve a multitude of puzzles to retrieve your quota of mineral resources and provide for your loving family back on Earth."
Unearthed takes you on a "sci-fi adventure" where every dig "brings you closer to uncovering the truth buried under alien soil."
Gumpy Function...
Update [Wed 21st Aug 2024 14:00]: A Steam page is now live for City Connection's Rushing Beat X: Return of Brawl Brothers (as spotted by Gosokkyu), allowing you to finally wishlist the game.
The store page lists English language options (alongside Japanese, French, German, and Spanish), and also includes a vague "coming soon" message in place of a more specific release date.
According to City Connection, the story of the game will help to bridge the gap between the second game in the series Rushing Beat Ran — Fukusei Toshi / Brawl Brothers and the third title Rushing Beat Shura / The Peace Keepers.
Here are some of the new screenshots, which were shared on Steam:

A new website has just been launched for Super Mario Bros. ROM hacking online.
The site, which is called SMB Arena, is the work of the Super Mario Bros. ROM hacker StudsX (with help from fellow hackers Eden GT and Hellfire), and aims to "create a portal where SMB1 enjoyers can find up-to-date tools, documents, [and] hacks"
It is currently home to over 3500+ hacks, which Eden GT successfully archived over the past decade, and also includes the ability for verified users to upload their own original hacks as well, for others to try out.
The launch of the site comes just three weeks after it was announced that the leading ROM Hacking community ROMHacking.Net would be winding down after 20 years, causing many to seek out alternatives...
Elite Systems is one of the UK's long-running producers and publishers of video game software, and celebrated its 40th birthday this month.
During the '80s and '90s, Elite competed with some of the biggest names in the business to publish titles like Dr. Franken, Dragon's Lair, Frank Bruno's Boxing, Bomb Jack, Ikari Warriors, Joe & Mac and Space Harrier, but in more recent years has been relatively quiet.
That's all set to change with the announcement of an interesting new online marketplace that will enable IP holders to leverage the value of their brands via an eBay-style auction system.
Speaking exclusively to GameParadise, Elite Systems director and co-founder Steve Wilcox explains that the service has been "an ambition of ours"...

If you've ever looked at Fable and thought, "Hmm, I wish I could be a literal god here," today is your lucky day! 22cans has announced god game Masters of Albion. The studio is (unsurprisingly) run by Peter Molyneux, the creator of Populous, Black & White, and Fable. Fun fact: Populous is considered to be the first god game! Masters of Albion combines the world in which Fable is set with the ability to play as a god-like overseer. The game was announced via a trailer and an interview with Molyneux at gamescom Opening Night Live.
Albion's story has always been one of power and consequence; it has a deep narrative, quests, and moral choices. You'll need to find your way through kings coming and going, lords smiling to your face but...
There aren't enough adjectives that I could add to the word "excited" to describe my level of anticipation for Lost Records: Bloom & Rage. Lost Records is a new IP for Don't Nod, and Bloom & Rage is the first game. It brings Don't Nod back to its narrative adventure roots – the studio is best known for Life is Strange, though that series is now owned by Square Enix who have decided to have Deck Nine continue the franchise. Lost Records: Bloom & Rage was announced with a teaser last December. In April, a '90s-style trailer introduced the world to the game's four main characters. It was originally set to launch in two parts (Tape 1 and Tape 2) late this year, but the studio decided to delay it to avoid direct competition with Life is...
Look. It's been a long time since we had a good Indiana Jones movie to get excited about, let's face it. Even something half decent, y'know. Dial of Destiny was a bland and soulless money grab, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a war crime…heck the more we think about it, were any of these movies, beyond Ark and Temple of Doom, really any good at all?
OK, so that's a very heated conversation for another time, perhaps, but it's worth mentioning here, as a few minutes with hands-off gameplay footage of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (courtesy of an invitation to Bethesda's recent preview event) has given us the distinct impression that the next great Indy adventure will arrive in the form of a video computer game. Who'd have thunk it...
It's safe to say that King of Meat has sprung out of nowhere. Developed by Guildford-based studio Glowmade and published by Amazon Games, it was one of the genuinely new announcements in Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase, and you may be wondering what exactly it has in store.
We were in the same boat when we were invited by the publisher to a preview event earlier this month. But, after watching the trailer, hearing from the developer, and getting to go hands-on for roughly two hours, we're starting to build up a pretty good picture of what it's all about.
King of Meat is goofy hack-and-slash fun that combines the co-op chaos of Fall Guys with the creative control of Mario Maker. It all felt very familiar and it's an experience...
Welcome! It's time to kick off Gamescom 2024 with the Gamescom Opening Night Live event, which promises to deliver a fantastic show featuring the likes of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, along with hopefully some superb surprises!
Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024 is expected to last around two hours, and it'll begin at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 7pm BST with a pre-show starting 30 minutes earlier. Settle in, say hello in the chat, and let's hope for a fun showcase!
Today, Lost in Cult revealed that it will be releasing a new book exploring 25 years of Grasshopper Manufacture — the developer behind titles like Killer7, No More Heroes, and Shadows Of The Damned.
Kill the Past: 25 Years of Grasshopper Manufacture is being written by Blake Hester, a games journalist who is also behind Read Only Memory's recently announced book, entitled The Oral History of Guitar Hero, Rock Band, And The Music Game Boom.
The 400-page book will feature dozens of in-depth interviews with creators across the company's long history, including Goichi Suda (SUDA51), Hiroyuki Tamura, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Tadyuki Nomaru, Ren Yamazaki, and James Mountain. This is in addition to an exclusive interview with Shinji Mikami, the...
Atari and Plaion have announced that they will be bringing out an updated version of the Atari 7800, which was originally released in the States back in 1986.
The Atari 7800+ will support both 2600 and 7800 game cartridges, will be able to connect to any HDMI TV, and features widescreen or 4:3 viewing for all displays.
It also comes with a wireless CX78+ gamepad, which is a recreation of the classic CX78 controller design, as well as a copy of the 7800+ game Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest on cartridge, and a USB-C charging cable.
To coincide with the news, Atari has also announced a bunch of new 2600 and 7800 games, which will cost $29.99 / £24.99 / €29.99. These include:
Asteroids Deluxe (7800+)
Bounty Bob Strikes Back (7800+)...
Pixel Games, the developer of Donut Dodo and Cash Cow DX, now has a Steam page up for its next arcade-inspired title.
Looney Landers, as the project is called, will be the third game in what the developer is now describing as "the Class of 1983 arcade trilogy" and was first teased back in June on Twitter. There it was described as "a whacky single-screen arcade party game, for one or two players (P1 vs CPU / P1 vs P2)", with the developer sharing a bunch of screenshots featuring a mischievous clown named Freddy, various silly toys and contraptions, and a bunch of small skydiving humans.
Speaking to Sebastian Kostka, the person behind Pixel Games, later that same month, he told us that the game originally started as a technical...
Powerhoof, the developer behind the 2D adventure game tool PowerQuest and titles like The Telwynium, Intergalactic Wizard Force, and The Inanimate Mr. Coatrack, has just released a devious new PC title that combines the parser-based problem-solving of classic Sierra-style text adventures with the twitch gameplay of a modern-day auto-runner.
Terminal City was made in a week as part of PowerJam3, and is described by its developer as, "What if you took 80s adventure games like Space Quest, crossed them with auto-runners like Canabalt, and threw in a dash of Another World?"
In the game, you play as a street kid named V-Loc who must escape the Syndicate corpos and rescue his friends, with the twist being that you can't control where the...
