Amazon's video game publishing label has been releasing plenty of MMORPGs in the last few years, with another one on the way in the form of an untitled The Lord of the Rings MMO. IGN decided to interview the boss of Amazon Games, Christoph Hartmann, to get an update on the game, as well as a new project that the company is working on--one that isn't an online title. In the interview, The discussion eventually pivoted to AI and the SAG-AFTRA voice actors strike, to which Hartmann made a handful of interesting comments.
The first of which was regarding the use of AI in video game development. Hartmann says that currently, the 5-year average development time for video games is "way too long", and that it makes it difficult for publishers...
Minisforum is launching a new mini PC, one that maximizes power, in as slim a form factor as possible. Designed to sort of look like the PlayStation 5, the Minisforum AtomMan G7 TI is extremely flat, while also rocking as much power as a beefy gaming laptop. Inside the machine is the mobile NVIDIA 4070 graphics card, an Intel® Core i9-14900HX Processer, and a staggering amount of vents to keep the machine cool. There's even a little RGB flair to perfect the gaming aesthetic, though the AtomMan G7 TI is also being marketed as a workstation PC, since it takes up so little space and has plenty of computing power. The "barebones" edition of the G7 TI is available for pre-order now, starting at $1,159.00, with plans to ship out on September...
Metroid Prime Trilogy, the Wii compilation of Retro Studios' first-person take on the Metroid series, launched in North America on 24th August 2009, exactly 15 years ago.
In honour of that sparking release (well, a little less sparkling than the originals in some places due to a few missing effects), we're taking the opportunity to recap Samus' story so far in the Metroid Prime games while we wait for the fourth numbered entry...
After several years of radio silence from Nintendo regarding the next instalment in the Metroid Prime series, the company finally revealed Metroid Prime 4: Beyond during the June 2024 Nintendo Direct broadcast.
With its release set for 2025, this would mark a staggering 18 years since the last mainline...
Supermassive Games generally releases its trademark style of story-focused horror games at such a consistent rate that it might come as a surprise its premier franchise, the Dark Pictures Anthology, has now been missing in action for two years. That's normal for any other developer, but the Guildford studio defies the usual production demands to where it always feels like its next game is right around the corner. If you take the team's standalone games into account, that's still actually the case, with The Casting of Frank Stone out in a few weeks. For its main franchise, though, a short hiatus has allowed Supermassive Games to upgrade essentially everything that makes a Dark Pictures game tick.
Directive 8020 is the next instalment in...
The Life Is Strange franchise is at its best whenever Max Caulfield is around, so Double Exposure already has a leg up on its predecessors. The latest narrative entry on PS5 marks only the second time the popular protagonist has played the lead role, and Deck Nine Games isn't purely leaning on her welcome return to sell copies. With a new superpower and a murder case to solve, Double Exposure proves compelling across two timelines — and her friend Safi is dead in just one of them.
Set years after the events of the original title, Max is attending university and has found a new home with a fresh group of friends. She's stopped using her powers — actively suppressing them — until she witnesses the death of a pal named Safi. Max attempts...
There are so many games today that claim to take inspiration from the PS1 era that it's often hard for them to stand out and grab people's attention.
Retro visuals typically aren't enough anymore to win people over on their own, with audiences also expecting a killer premise to make them drop what they are doing and get invested. And in the case of Cold & Afraid, we think the developers Sunamii Games have absolutely crushed it, with the studio pitching its latest game to players as essentially what "If Squaresoft Made A Law & Order Game in 1999".
If you're anything like us, this description along with the accompanying video of a young woman exploring gritty PS1-style environments has probably stopped you in your tracks and you're...
The Saturn benefitted from a 4MEG RAM cartridge which allowed developers to store more information and create arcade-perfect ports of games like X-Men vs. Street Fighter and King of Fighters '96, and ended up being one of the more unique aspects of the console's accessory library.
A decade ago, homebrew developer Tiido started work on a similar (unofficial) project for the Sega / Mega CD, and it has recently been resurrected by a new team of devs (thanks, Retro RGB).
MiGeRA recently reverse-engineered Tiido's original prototype board, and this appears to have triggered a wave of interest in reviving the project. It seems that the main focus of the cart will be to expand the possibilities of Sega CD and 32X games.
The current board...
Taki Udon has given us another tease of his upcoming MiSTer handheld, showing both the 'Plan A' and 'Plan B' variants – which he hopes to release alongside one another.
He has also confirmed that the device will have a Real-Time Clock (handy for games like Pokemon on the Game Boy), pogo pins on the bottom for IO expansion/accessories, Hall Effect analogue sticks and a D-pad which is placed above the left-hand analogue stick.
He has also stated that while the default button layout will be the traditional four-button diamond, users will be able to "swap out the front shell and change a daughter board to get six buttons."
Taki Udon has also revealed the internal codename for this product, Super R2, along with an image of the Plan A...
Update [Fri 23rd Aug, 2024 10:30 BST]: Pigsy has released a new video showing off some of the recent developments related to his Symphony of the Night Genesis port.
Update [Mon 25th Dec, 2023 14:25 GMT]: Pigsy has released a playable demo - Merry Christmas!
You can download it here.
Original Story [Tue 3rd Jan, 2023 12:30 GMT]: Some time ago, our friends over at Nintendo Life reported on the existence of a Sega Mega Drive / Genesis port of Konami's legendary Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Developed by 'Pigsy', this project is now pretty advanced, as you can see from the video below (thanks, Indie Retro News).
Alucard's animation looks perfect, and the backgrounds are also a very, very close match to the PlayStation...
After various "too good to be true" showcases during livestreams in the past, we can now officially confirm that Crimson Desert is an actual, real video game. In a 60-minute session on the Gamescom show floor, we pressed all the buttons on a PS5 controller connected to a PC and things happened on-screen — it's not smoke and mirrors; the promising footage showcased in years gone by really is the game Pearl Abyss is developing right now.
Or, rather, the combat portion is. The developer out of South Korea shipped a demo to Gamescom all about the fighting in Crimson Desert. There will be a huge open world connecting all the battles together, along with many other systems, features, and mechanics, but the studio has chosen to focus on enemy...
I'm trying to keep my excitement about Life is Strange: Double Exposure in check fearing total disappointment. (More on that later.) The direct sequel to Life is Strange – remember, Life is Strange 2 is a completely different story – was announced at June's Xbox Games Showcase. A reveal livestream soon after showcased some gameplay mechanics plus interviews with two of the game's developers and the actress who voices Max. With Gamescom currently running, Square Enix has taken the opportunity to show off Max's new power of Pulse and Shift ability in a "Powers Unveiled" trailer.
I'm not going to lie, a lot of the news about Life is Strange: Double Exposure makes me nervous. I was originally ecstatic because I adore Max, but then the red...
It was only two weeks ago that there was an announcement made that cozy, semi-open world exploration adventure game Caravan SandWitch would be launching sometime this September, but at gamescom 2024 a specific date was announced via a new trailer (that also shows off gameplay for the first time). Travel the rich landscape in your customizable van while interacting with Cigalo's inhabitants and helping them. Every step you take unravels more of the mystery surrounding your sister's disappearance.
Head out on the open road with your van and an array of tools to try and find your sister. Open up new passages and ruins by upgrading...
In a teaser video posted earlier today, GoRetroid announced its latest handheld, the Retroid Pocket Mini.
The roughly 1-minute-long video didn't reveal much about the device, in terms of specs, price, or even a release date, but gave us a quick look at a render of what it will potentially look like once it is released.
From this video, we can see that the device will be significantly smaller than many of Retroid's previous efforts, but will be a little bit chunkier as a result. It will feature dual-LED joysticks, a D-Pad positioned on the upper left side of the machine, and face buttons (X,Y,B,A) on the upper right-hand side.
In addition to this, the current design also displays stacked shoulder buttons, a 4:3 screen, and three...
If you're someone who has an affinity for the Sega Master System, then you might be interested in checking out Star Runner — a new action-puzzler game for PC that was recently released on itch.io and is designed as a bit of a love letter to the classic Sega machine.
The game was developed by @badcomputer0, who previously created the 8-bit shoot 'em up Blast Arena, and features an incredible upbeat soundtrack from the self-described "Master System fanatic" Polaria Poyon.
It sees players taking control of the titular Star Runner — a helmet-wearing superhero — as they are tasked with travelling through various mazes in space transforming all of the available tiles from red to blue. There are 20 levels in total, with the difficulty...
The indie hardware developer Genki has announced a new collaboration with the technology company 8BitDo to release an SNES-inspired wireless controller, called the Genki PocketPro.
The new controller is a modified version of 8BitDo's SN30 Pro, which was inspired by the SNES gamepad and the classic PlayStation DualShock, and comes in a white translucent design with buttons modelled after the colors featured in Genki's logo.
The controller can either be used via a wired connection or low-latency Bluetooth, and also features Hall-Effect drift-free analog sticks, as well as stacked shoulder buttons, and options for gyro, rumble, and turbo functionality. It is described as being universally compatible and can be used with various platforms...
AI is taking over, or so we're told – but it would seem that the technology, while impressive, isn't quite at the point where it will replace video game historians.
We've been messing around with Google's Gemini AI assistant, and have found that it often makes glaring mistakes when it comes to summarizing video game history.
For example, when asking Gemini to sum up the achievements of Argonaut Software – the defunct British studio responsible for Croc and Star Fox – Google's AI assistant incorrectly claims that it was founded by Ian Bell (co-creator of Elite), Jon Hare (founder of Sensible Software), and Oliver Jowett – completely omitting Jez San, the company's actual founder. It also lists the company's location as Cambridge, which...
The Sega Game Gear already has a ton of great shoot 'em ups, but it could be about to get another later this year, in the form of the Suzuki Plan's promising naval barrage game Battle Marine (as reported by @GGEAR_TARO).
Battle Marine was released on Steam earlier this year in February and was described at the time as a "somewhat retro yet new" experience with plenty of powerful lasers and explosions.
It saw players assuming command of a naval vessel floating above a sea of enemies, with the goal being to achieve high scores, through avoiding projectiles, building up combos by chaining attacks, and collecting various medals that are dropped onscreen.
It was built with a custom SDK called VGS-Zero, which is a virtual game machine...
Developer 333Studios has unveiled their debut title, Retrieval, at Gamescom. This cinematic horror adventure game is said to blend immersive storytelling, gripping gameplay and deep character development.
Retrieval is available to wishlist now on Steam and the PlayStation Store now with Xbox to follow. There is no release window for the game.
Developer Nekki has aired a new trailer for their upcoming action game, SPINE, that provides a glimpse of the gameplay. The video also showcases the debut of the game's original soundtrack by producer and composer Le Castle Vania, whose music features throughout the John Wick movie franchise.
Features of SPINE include:
Movie-Like Experience – SPINE puts players inside the action with a dynamic combat camera that makes every fight feel like a movie, without ever stealing control from players.
Innovative Combat – A thrilling fusion of cinematic gunplay and beat 'em up. Dive into the chaos of SPINE's combat, where every move is a dance between gunfire and raw, close-quarter bullet mayhem. It's not just a game; it's an artistic canvas...
