With Apple having recently updated their guidelines for the App Store, iOS users have been left to speculate on specific wording and whether retro emulators as we know them would truly have a place in the great walled garden. Today it seems out questions have been answered with the arrival of what appears to be the first traditional emulator on the App Store: iGBA. Having downloaded it myself I can confirm it is a functional GBA and GBC emulator, so what's the catch? Well to be blunt, this really just looks like the classic iOS emulator GBA4iOS, with unavoidable advertisements thrown in for good measure. This comes from a developer with an extensive library of apps ranging from barcode scanners to money trackers, all oddly four...
Heavily inspired by the game mechanics of Battle City (a popular game during the '80s), newly-announced Threads of War is designed in the style of Ukrainian embroidery. The visual style particularly attracted my attention. War and embroidery may seem like complete opposites, but many Ukrainian artists have used the skillful craft (crafty skill?) as a sign of rebellion. Using the aforementioned mechanics combined with roguelite progression, the game has players experience the liberation of Ukrainian cities during the first year of full-scale war. Players begin in Hostomel, continue in Kyiv and other cities, and end at the last "boss" in 2022: the battle for Kherson. Levels become more challenging as Threads of War progresses, with...
Indie games are struggling more than ever now, and only you can save them You could be forgiven for thinking indie games are thriving right now. Last night's triple-I indie showcase announced Slay the Spire 2, which will undoubtedly be a huge hit, among a host of other cute and quirky games. I loved the recent indie release Death of a Wish, and Devolver Digital's latest releases Pepper Grinder and Children of the Sun both launched to excellent reviews and widespread media coverage. The absence of big triple-A hitters in 2024 is starting to be felt in this post-Final Fantasy, Like A Dragon, and Dragon's Dogma world. You might be able to argue that Stellar Blade is triple-A – its scope certainly seems up there – but it's a new IP and...
With Dawntrail just over two months away, Final Fantasy 14 will put a bookend on its 10th-anniversary celebrations via its annual, 14-hour broadcast. As Square Enix prepares to launch a new expansion, the 10th anniversary of Final Fantasy 14 will officially conclude on April 12 and 13 with the ninth annual 14-hour Broadcast. Since the game's storied downfall and rebirth in the early 2010s, Final Fantasy 14 has risen from the ashes and become one of the most beloved entries in the Final Fantasy franchise. The upcoming broadcast will be a bookend to one chapter, and the start of another. On July 2, Final Fantasy 14 will release its fifth expansion, Dawntrail, which is stated to be the start of a new saga in the world of Etheirys...
Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is just around the corner, which means time's running out to get ready for its arrival. Shadow of the Erdtree is set to be absolutely massive; according to director Hidetaka Miyazaki, the addition will be approximately the size of Elden Ring's starting area, Limgrave. In other words, you'll have a lot to dig into come June 21, including finding out what happened to the game's most mysterious demigod — but only if you're prepared for it. If you're not sure how to prepare for the expansion or simply haven't played the base game in ages, don't worry. Here's everything you need to do in Elden Ring before Shadow of the Erdtree. REACH AND DEFEAT MOHG TO GAIN ACCESS While you don't have to...
Friday the 13th is one of the horror movies that led to the popularity of the slasher horror genre, following in the footsteps of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween. The big difference between the Friday the 13th series and those movies is that there's been more than one character doing all the killing in the series. While Jason Vorhees is the most notable in the franchise, the series also featured Pamela Voorhees (Jason's mother) and Roy (pretending to be Jason) as the killer, along with some supernatural elements that keep raising the stakes as the movies went on. And Jason has killed a lot of people over the years. The fourth movie, The Final Chapter, is a somewhat more grounded slasher movie than later entries, when the series...
Joker was a box office hit, and early signs from the first Joker: Folie à Deux teaser trailer indicate the follow-up might follow suit. The first teaser trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux was recently released and became the highest-viewed trailer in its first 24 hours for Warner Bros. since the smash hit Barbie. Joker was a runaway hit for DC in 2019, earning over $1 billion at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar for his performance as the titular character and returns for Joker: Folie à Deux alongside Lady Gaga as a completely new take on Harley Quinn. There's no way to know if Joker: Folie à Deux will reach the same critical and financial heights as its...
Homebrew games for retro consoles have seen a rise over the years thanks to new tools and community-made development kits, which help a lot in the process of creating brand-new games for older consoles. This past month, romhacker and developer kandowontu, also known for his Starfox EX romhack for the original Starfox and several FastROM hacks for over 60 titles for the SNES, alongside a team of artists and other coders, have been working lately on a new homebrew game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) titled "Famidash", a demake of the popular rhythm-action platformer indie game Geometry Dash developed originally by Robert Topala on 2013 (also be found on Steam). Famidash is currently being developed in what seems to be a...
HoldHold on to your parsnips, because an apocalypse has struck the pastoral lands of Stardew Valley. No, it wasn't a game-breaking bug or new content. Rather, the highly anticipated Stardew Valley 1.6 update introduced changes that overhauled the back end and rendered several of its most popular mods completely useless. While mod compatibility might not be at the top of mind for every fan, it's paramount in the larger Stardew Valley community, where a single mod might have more than 10 million downloads. Now, the 1.6 update has kicked off a frenzied scramble among its enthusiast creators to fix their content and mitigate the effects of what people in the community are calling the "modpocalypse." But it's not all bad news. Update 1.6...
Discord is reportedly removing servers for the Nintendo Switch emulators Suyu and Sudachi while also completely disabling the accounts for their respective developers. As covered by The Verge, the developers for the emulators had received communication from Discord about how they were supposedly sharing content that violates intellectual property. In a statement provided to The Verge, Discord said that there was a court ordered injunction for the takedown of such materials, suggesting that the action is directly linked to the previous legal issues surrounding the Switch emulator Yuzu. What's unclear about this development, however, is that it's not obvious as to whether the Discord channels themselves were actually violating IP...
Legacyquels to '80s movies are all the rage lately. Despite decades passing since they first hit theaters, franchises like Top Gun and Ghostbusters are getting a new lease on life thanks to large-scale blockbusters that continue the story and capitalize on the nostalgia for their first installments. While this formula usually works for action-packed, crowd-pleasing adventures, 2024's Beetlejuice sequel, aptly titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is more of a gamble. Ahead of its September 5th release, we now have our first look at Tim Burton's take on the afterlife, and it proves the original movie's self-aware tone hasn't gone anywhere. Check out the full teaser below. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice follows three generations of Deetz women...
Developer OutOfTheBit definitely has experience with cinematic puzzle platformers: Full Void was all about handcrafted 2D art, innovative mechanics, and atmospheric storytelling. OutOfTheBit is taking on that genre again with Nanuka: Secret of the Shattering Moon. Announced today, the game promises to fuse handcrafted animations, engaging combat, and magical adventure. This is all set in a believably fantastical world. It is set to launch in early 2025. Nanuka's journey in a world inspired by the Sicilian landscape begins on an island. It seems peaceful and picturesque until a tale of magical abilities and a looming disaster reveals itself. It's up to Nanuka to prevent the threat at hand. As the story progresses, importance is placed...
This year has proven to be a pretty exciting first half for gaming. There have been some big surprises that kicked the year off with a bang, and it looks like the week of May 16 is set to bring some more titles to the forefront. From the surprising success of Helldivers 2 to larger titles, like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, not meeting sales expectations, the first half of 2024 has been unpredictable. The unpredictability of the year's first quarter has been exciting to watch unfold, and as the next phase of the year comes into focus, many new games await. However, one of the most exciting release windows to look forward to is the middle of May. As of right now, the week of May 16 is stacked with some strong contenders that...

Square Enix has dropped a ton of information about SaGa Emerald Beyond, the latest standalone title in the SaGa franchise that was first announced during a Nintendo Direct last September. The game features six protagonists in five unique story arcs; you can play the same arc two times and get two different experiences thanks to the branching plot points based on choices. There are 17 unique worlds, including a forest of skyscrapers and a world governed by five witches. Today's news about SaGa Emerald Beyond includes information on (and a trailer for) one of the main characters (Diva No. 5), the National Extradimensional Exploratory Task Force, characters who can join the retinue, three worlds, and the battle system. Let's tackle that...
I'm not going to sugarcoat it: I have developed what might be described as an unhealthy obsession with certain reality TV shows. 1999 was integral when it comes to some of the shows that I'm still watching: it was the year Big Brother was created, and The Real World and Road Rules were continuing to dominate MTV alongside the second season of The Challenge (it was still called Real World/Road Rules Challenge). So just imagine my excitement when darkly comic reality TV thirst-person shooter The Crush House was announced today. Set in 1999 Malibu, the game has players produce each season of a reality show. It should be chaotic in the best of ways! Jae has just become the producer of the hottest reality show around, The Crush House. But...
Dating visual novel games often have somewhat unique stories, but generally tend to use the same formula: of one person meets a bunch of people, said one person likes said bunch of people, and said one person must choose one from the bunch of people to live with harmoniously forever. I've played many, with a wide variety of stories. I've played a game about being a human dating cats, for crying out loud. In addition to dating lots of "people" in games, I've faced my fair share of Lovecraftian horror in action games like Call of Cthulhu and The Sinking City. The Sucker for Love series actually does combine original Lovecraftian stories with dating sims, and Steam players seem to love it. The second title, Sucker For Love: Date to Die...
If you want an accurate game about dinosaurs, please avert your eyes. Newly-announced shop sim Amber Isle features prehistroic animals from a range of eras, living side-by-side. (Fun fact: Stegosaurus lived more than 80 million years before Tyrannosaurus rex.) And as a bonus, they are all adorable. Amber Isle has the player moving to the village as its new (and only) shopkeep. It's not easy having to stock everything for everyone, but somebody's got to do it! Begin by creating a character, and later on change clothes, crests, and colour to further individualise them. After that, spend your time maintaining your shop, befriending the locals, and improving the village. Amber Isle has seen better days, but improve it and other Paleofolk...
The PC version of the first-person survival horror adventure is set to be released via Steam next month, while the console versions are still slated for 2024. Are you prepared to confront ghosts, complete mind-bending puzzles, and unearth a conspiracy? The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication takes place at Wen Hua University, which is known for its ghost tales across Taiwan. It all begins when the school's film club decides to recruit new members by orchestrating a Carnival of Horror within an infamously haunted building on campus. Planning on resurrecting an old campus mystery, night is the only time to shoot. As the cameras begin rolling things get a little… weird. The line between fact and fiction becomes blurry as inexplicable things...
Xbox is reportedly preparing a Call of Duty Game Pass announcement, which could drop alongside Black Ops Gulf War's reveal during the Xbox Showcase. While many players are still working their way through the Call of Duty achievements since Modern Warfare III dropped last year, it is that time of the year for the rumor mill to start churning out details about the next installment. According to reports, this year's Call of Duty title is Black Ops Gulf War, and it's been suggested we could see the reveal arrive during this year's Xbox Showcase in June. Interestingly, Xbox is reportedly preparing a Call of Duty Game Pass announcement as well, so we could be adding the popular shooter to our list of games coming to Game Pass in the...
