Caravan SandWitch, a cozy semi-open adventure game, was revealed to the world in late May. Today, a September release window was announced for PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. (I love it when games are announced mere months before launch!) The captivating title is set in a Provence-like sci-fi world and is developed by a remote studio based in Provence, so the inspiration for the locations is based on first-hand knowledge.
The planet has gone from green to a complete desert thanks to human activities and over-exploitation. The game's narrative heart is a mystery: your sister is missing! With each step you take, the truth becomes clearer. Traverse a rich landscape in your van, which is customizable. Meet and interact with...
Goichi Suda – often known simply as Suda51 – has made a name for himself in the world of video games thanks to titles like Killer7, Shadows Of The Damned, Lollipop Chainsaw and No More Heroes, but some of his projects haven't had the exposure they perhaps deserve – and 1997's Moonlight Syndrome certainly falls into that category.
An instalment in Human's Twilight Syndrome series, the game was directed and co-written by Suda, and mixes visual novel elements with a horror setting. It would be Suda's final game for Human before he left to found Grasshopper Manufacture in 1998 – but it never got released outside of Japan.
Thankfully, it looks like Suda51 fans might finally be getting the chance to play Moonlight Syndrome in English...
Japanese company Columbus Circle is launching a new SNES clone in Japan this month.
The IPS 16bit Pocket HD is compatible with Super Famicom and SNES carts, and comes with a 4.3-inch IPS LCD screen and wireless controllers. It can also be connected to your TV via HDMI.
It arrives in Japan on August 15th, 2024, and will cost 22,880 yen / £124 / $157.
"This product is a portable SFC compatible machine that allows you to enjoy nostalgic "Super Famicom" software," says the manufacturer.
Here's some more PR:
The device comes with lithium-ion batteries, which take approximately 6 hours to charge.
Columbus Circle also notes that it doesn't guarantee that not all games will work perfectly. "Some games may not work, and some games...
No, that's not Taki Udon's just-announced handheld – it's the PowKiddy V10, which we'll be reviewing ourselves soon
YouTuber and modder Taki Udon has been in the headlines a lot recently, and with good reason – he's the driving force behind a project which aims to make FPGA gaming more affordable.
Taki Udon has already lifted the lid on the $99 MiSTer FPGA alternative, and has revealed plans to produce a handheld FPGA system as well as other products.
However, he's now announced another venture and it's one which isn't related to his work with FPGA technology.
"I've been working on an open-source gaming handheld for over two years, with the entire process filmed and documented from A-Z," he says on Twitter. "I am happy to say the...
Remember the unlikely port of Duck Hunt we got for the Game Boy? Well, Tiger Bronnikov, the developer behind that project, is back – and this time he wants to create a next-gen version of Nintendo's iconic light gun shooter.
Dubbed Tiny Duck Hunt 3D, the game is currently being prepped for a Kickstarter campaign and, outside of a short animation video, is very early in development.
"One of the most popular old-school games is coming," says the trailer's description. "Sweet graphics, nice gameplay, smart and convenient control." Bronnikov describes it as "next-generation Duck Hunt in a cute cartoon 3D world."
The Kickstarter launches on the 23rd of September, 2024.
Duck Hunt, which recently turned 40, still ranks as one of the most...
Last week gave us the shocking news that Game Informer – one of the most popular video game magazines in the world – was being closed down by its parent company, GameStop.
The mag's 13 staff were immediately let go, and the next issue – which was apparently close to being complete, was canned. The closure was conformed on the official Game Informer Twitter account in a statement which curiously read like it was formulated in a GameStop boardroom.
It would seem that was indeed the case, because a fresh statement was made by the official account yesterday which appears to have come from the staff of the publication, rather than the owners that shut it down.
The post didn't last long; it was soon deleted, along with the entire Game...
Romhacking has many facets, from unofficial translations of games released in only one region, new levels and/or character modifications, to quality of life improvements to the original titles, amongst many, many other types of romhacks as a whole.
Some intuitive romhackers see the tools and knowledge to make entirely new stories out of the original games as a base, sometimes creating a new scenario of said game in a brand new light and tone. This is the case for one such project from the talented romhacker and modder BigSharkZ, who worked on an entirely new story based on a "what if" scenario if EarthBound had a bad ending of sorts.
The original project was showcased in a video named "BuzzBound: Cursed EarthBound Prequel" from July...
Accessory maker Genki has just announced its next project, and it's likely to be of interest to Steam Deck and ROG Ally owners, as well as iPhone videographers looking for more storage.
The SavePoint is a "gaming SSD" that offers up to 2TB of storage and is compatible with a wide range of devices. "Imagine carrying up to 2TB of your favorite games wherever you go," says Genki. "We've come a long way since Steve Jobs famously introduced '1,000 songs in your pocket.' With SavePoint, you can store 400,000 songs in a device the size of a Gameboy cartridge. With 10Gbps bandwidth, you can run AAA games directly from the drive and even boot external operating systems."
Connecting to your device using a USB-C cable, SavePoint grants instant...
Earlier today, City Connection announced a partnership with the Japanese artist and homebrew game creator RIKI to bring five of their NES / Famicom homebrews to Nintendo Switch inside of a single collection, called RIKI 8Bit Game Collection (thanks Gematsu!).
The collection will include the jumping action game Kira Kira Star Night!, the shoot 'em up Astro Ninja Man DX, and three interactive chiptune albums called 8Bit Music Power, 8Bit Music Power Final, and 8Bit Music Power Encore. All of these feature music from a diverse list of Japanese composers.
The collection will be released on November 28th, 2024 in Japan and will cost ¥4,980 digitally and ¥5,940 at retail. A special edition is being produced that will sell for ¥9900, and...
Antstream has announced that Centipede (Atari 8-bit) and The Lords Of Midnight (ZX Spectrum) have joined its library of streamable retro games.
"Previously a VCS exclusive, the Atari 8-bit version of Centipede joins Antstream this week," says the company. "An iconic game that proved incredibly popular in the arcades, Centipede originally launched in 1981 before being released on multiple platforms. The game is a fixed shooter where the titular centipede moves left and right across the screen, getting lower with each crossing."
The Lords of Midnight is going to be of intense interest to fans of the strategy RPG genre. "A fantasy strategy/RPG hybrid game that launched originally for the ZX Spectrum in 1984, before being converted to...
ROM hacker @rumbleminze has confirmed that they are porting Sunsoft's NES classic Blaster Master to the SNES.
"After taking a bit of a break, this weekend I started my next NES -> SNES conversion," says the developer. "Background tiles are all using greyscale since I haven't gotten to attributes yet. Getting to this point has been 56 builds, for anyone curious."
Originally released in Japan in June 1988 as Chō Wakusei Senki Metafight, Blaster Master is one of the most memorable NES releases and would spawn a series which continues to this very day – the most recent entry being 2021's Blaster Master Zero 3.
While we're on the topic, our friends at Digital Foundry have recently visited Sunsoft in Japan and produced this excellent video:
DidYouKnowGaming, a popular video game channel dealing in video game trivia and news about cancelled projects, has recently updated the second part of its series investigating every cancelled Nintendo 64DD game and in the process has helped debunk a persistent rumour about Donkey Kong 64 beginning development on the Japanese-exclusive disk drive add-on.
For years, it's been claimed on Wikipedia that Donkey Kong 64 was among the games that were slated to be developed for the add-on before being switched over to an N64 cartridge, with the article linking to a Gamespot article from 1997 citing "Japanese reports". In this video, however, narrated by Hard4Games, DidYouKnowGaming were able to confirm with Rare artist Carl Tilley and other...
Namco's Time Crisis series was one of the most popular light gun shooter franchises of the '90s, with the first three games becoming sizeable hits both in arcades and on home consoles.
However, in more recent years, the series has become arcade-exclusive, with 2015's Time Crisis 5 never getting ported to home formats.
Thankfully, because it's running on Unreal Engine 3 and Windows, you can actually play Time Crisis 5 natively on your modern-day PC – a fact that more people need to be aware of, we think.
There's a guide on how to do this here, and it's worth noting that you'll be using your mouse to interact with the game, as light gun support isn't included.
However, with the Sinden Light Gun on the market, there's the chance that...

Dinosaur Polo Club unveils an unannounced cancelled project
It's unusual for a game studio to be extremely transparent about cancelled projects, but Dinosaur Polo Club is breaking that mould. Last week, the developer unveiled Magic School, which will never be released. The studio wants to champion the hard work team members put into the project and is grateful that it can retain its team members by redirecting their skills to other titles. Magic School was completely different from the minimalist puzzle games Dinosaur Polo Club...
Ace Attorney Investigations is the last compilation of the extended Phoenix Wright universe that we needed to have the full set on modern consoles. That in itself is a good reason to pick it up for completionists, but I would imagine that many people will also be interested in this collection because it also includes an (effectively) all-new game to play.
Prosecutor's Gambit, the second title in the collection, was never formally released outside of Japan. So, while we are still technically waiting for a proper new game in this series, for many of us this will be an all-new experience. It's also off to a very good start, based on the opening case that I played of it.
One of the most obviously interesting qualities of both of these...
All across the industry, prices are rising. We've seen hardware prices go up, as the PlayStation 5 is more expensive than when it launched, and subscription prices hike up as well, following last month's announcement that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate would go from $16.99 to $19.99 a month. The latest price increase will be for the Xbox Series X|S, where the MSRP of the console will increase a fair bit, but only for customers in Japan. In a market that Microsoft has struggled to compete in, it'll be even harder to move Xbox units, as the Xbox Series X will go from 59,978 yen to 66,978 yen, the Xbox Series S (1TB) will go from 44,578 yen to 49,978 yen, and finally, the base model Xbox Series S will go from 37,978 yen to 44,578 yen.

Game Informer has announced that it is closing down after 33 years.
The publication, owned by US retailer GameStop, started back in August 1993, but has announced its closure via a short post on social media. It states, "After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer" (although sources have reportly told Kotaku that nobody at Game Informer wrote the announcement themselves).
It seems that the closure had come as a bit of a shock to the team too, with online content director Brian Shea stating "My heart is broken" as he quoted the news. Similarly, magazine contrent director Kyle Hilliard...
I don't think I've played a lot of games developed in Indonesia, but the ones that I have remain with me: Coffee Talk, its sequel, and A Space for the Unbound are great examples. While more horror than cozy, Let Me Out can teach its players about Indonesian mythology. Fascinating! The mystery horror puzzle exploration game about a ten-year-old child in a cursed village and his attempt at uncovering what happened to his mother is set to launch for PC next week.
Alvin, the ten-year-old, wakes up from a nightmare only to discover it is far from over. Everyone, including Alvin's own mother, has vanished. As ghosts appear in the village out of nowhere, Alvin must find a way out of his home to discover the origin of a mysterious event.

Like many, I was obsessed with stickers as a child. Smelly ones, glittery ones, puffy ones… I loved them all. When Sticky Business launched last year, the idea of storytelling through sticker-making appealed to me. Some free updates and the Plan With Me DLC were released during that time. Business must be booming, because the game is about to expand further with its upcoming Camp Zinnias DLC. Camp is also something I remember fondly from childhood; I was extremely shy (and I still am) but camp somehow brought out adventurous parts in me I didn't know I had. Seeing sticker nostalgia and camp nostalgia combined feels so cozy. A match made in heaven!
In Sticky Business, you are the owner of your own sticker business. As an owner, you must...
The game modification site ROMhacking.net, home to nearly 20 years worth of ROM hacks and community projects, has decided to close its doors as of August 1st, 2024. This sudden change comes after an increase in bot activity, content takedowns, and hostility with those involved with the site's operations and ownership.
The website's database, including all ROM hacks and other content uploaded to the site, has been preserved on archive.org. In addition, the site will remain up in a read-only state.
