When it comes to the world of video game music, few composers have as impressive a body of work as Hitoshi Sakimoto, which is ironic as he never initially set out to be a musician in the first place.
A self-proclaimed "science and technology geek", Sakimoto got his start as a programmer and composer as a teenager on Revolter — a vertical shoot 'em up for the PC8801SR created by a small group of video game makers — where he contributed to the music and wrote the sound driver "Terpischorean" (which was later used in countless other Japanese games). At the time, despite contributing music to Revolter, he was mostly content on being a video game programmer, but backed by the encouragement of both his friends and colleagues, he later made...
Satoru Yamashita, an artist and designer who worked on games like Final Fight, Street Fighter II, and more, has just launched a Kickstarter for a brand new game for PC.
Dhalman, as the game is called, is inspired by Yamashita's travels around the world and focuses on a young boy who must gather rare spices and earn money through street fights, to improve his family's curry shop. It is being pitched as a mixture of a Metroidvania and a restaurant simulator and will feature music from the former Mega Man Battle Network composer Akari Kaida. But before you go getting too excited, it's worth mentioning a few red flags that we've come across.
For one, the game is being worked on in collaboration with Minnapad, who previously partnered with...
Well, that didn't take long at all. ININ Games has just announced X-Out Resurfaced — a new remaster of the classic underwater shmup coming this Winter for Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PS5, and PC (via Steam and GOG).
Here's a description of the game taken from ININ Games' YouTube channel:
You can watch the debut trailer below:
The original Streets of Rage has been somewhat overshadowed by its illustrious sequel, but we can't help but have a soft spot for it.
Released at a time when SNES owners were cooing about Final Fight being a Nintendo exclusive, it offered tight gameplay, great music and – most important of all – a two-player mode, something which the SNES version of Final Fight notably lacked.
That two-player mode was leveraged in an usual way at the game's conclusion, too. Perhaps taking inspiration from Double Dragon – where players had to fight one another at the end to win the affections of the damsel in distress – Streets of Rage (or Bare Knuckle as it's known in Japan) gives you the option of becoming Dr. X's right-hand man. If this option is...
A European Citizens Initiative has been launched by the Stop Killing Games campaign, as one of multiple methods being pursued to challenge planned obsolescence in videogames. As summarized by the initiative itself:
If the Citizens Initiative reaches the signature requirement, the European Comission is required to issue a formal reply and explain its decision on if it will or will not propose new EU legislation based on the initiative. The initiative runs for one year, by which time it must have surpassed one million valid signatures.
In order to be eligible for the petition, participants must be:
A citizen of a EU country
Of voting age
Those wishing to sign can find the Initiative on the ECI website, as well as further information...
It turns out that I'm not the only person who took one look at Promise Mascot Agency's announcement two months ago to find I was both baffled and immediately emotionally invested. Today, Kaizen Game Works released a gameplay deep dive video for the world's first open world mascot management crime drama. While some aspects of the game have become clearer, I expect most of the mystery won't be revealed until it's launched next year, though one does reveal itself through this new trailer: fans of Paradise Killer may recognize the voice narrating the deep dive. Any ideas?
Here's what has been revealed of the story before today's video: Michi is a disgraced yakuza lieutenant who is exiled to a cursed town to turn a bankrupt mascot agency...
Handheld gaming device manufacturer AYANEO has today launched two new consoles, the Pocket DMG and the Pocket MICRO. These devices pack recognizable form factors, with the Pocket DMG taking inspiration from the Game Boy and the Pocket MICRO borrowing from the Game Boy Micro.
Specs of the AYANEO Pocket DMG are as follows:
Specs of the AYANEO MICRO are as follows:
Early Bird prices starts at $339 for the AYANEO Pocket DMG and $189 for the AYANEO Pocket MICRO. As with its other devices, AYANEO has opted for the crowdfunding route for its new devices. Caution is advised with such campaigns but the company has a strong track record with delivering its products to backers.
DMA Design's Amiga classic Lemmings has been brought over to a lot of different platforms over the years, but one port that sadly never made it was Data East's proposed version for the arcade.
From the little we know about the port it was in development in the early 90s, and resulted in a PCB prototype that was eventually rescued by the Lemmings creator Mike Dailly when Rockstar closed DMA Design's Dundee office around 1999 to 2000.
It's currently unknown exactly why the game was commissioned or the reasons why it was cancelled (we're working on finding out), but fortunately, the game has since made its way out to the public in an unofficial capacity, being supported via emulation in MAME. As for the PCB prototype, Dailly has since...
Developer Worldwalker Games has announced that their turn-based RPG, Wildermyth, will launch on consoles and will be published by Auroch Digital. For the occasion, an announcement trailer for the Console Edition was aired:

Bandai Namco has aired a new trailer for the upcoming Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero which introduces characters from the first two Dragon Ball Sagas; Saiyan and Namek.
Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero will launch on 11th October for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
It seems crazy to think that it has been over 15 years since the last mainline game in the Mana series. It has been kept alive through spin-offs, remakes, and a collection, but the time feels right for something brand new. Square Enix announced Visions of Mana in late 2023, with an August release date announced last month. For those as impatient as me or those who want free in-game goodies, a demo was launched for multiple platforms today. In it, you can play through a small part of the main story, experiencing combat and exploration in the field. There is also a new trailer showcasing the environments, the combat, and the colourful cast.
Visions of Mana begins in Tianeea, also known as the Fire Village. The locals are preparing for...
It's taken years of waiting but it is nearly time for the first localization of Date A Live: Ren Dystopia to be released for PC worldwide as a launch window of September has been announced. The visual novel has only been available for PlayStation 4 in Japan since its original launch, so Japan will also be getting a PC version for the first time; the PC version will feature Japanese audio with English, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese subtitles. The original story based in the famed Date A Live universe will include ten returning characters and one new one – Ren.
For thirty years, Earth has been plagued by spacequakes that are triggered Spirits, enigmatic entities. Shido meets a Spirit who has become completely disillusioned with...
It's fair to say that the recent announcement of the ModRetro Chromatic caused quite a stir.
It's a brand-new FPGA replica of the Game Boy that not only runs all Game Boy and Game Boy Color software but also boasts a custom display which replicates the look of the original in painstaking detail.
The launch is coming this Christmas, with units costing $200 / £160. Keen to learn more about what makes Chromatic so special, we were fortunate enough to speak with ModRetro CEO and Engineer Torin Herndon.
What makes the Game Boy such a special system that we're still seeing new variants decades after it launched?
I think people (including myself) long for an era where casual handheld gaming wasn't dominated by phones. In the Game Boy era...
Crypt Custodian, a promising Metroidvania game from one-man developer Kyle Thompson, will release for PS5 and PS4 on 27th August 2024, it's been confirmed. Having just died, you'll play as a "mischievous" cat named Pluto, whose job it is to "clean" the afterlife. Featuring the usual hallmarks of the genre, you can see the game in action in the trailer above.
The Steam page states: "Complete puzzles, battle epic bosses, and clean your way through ruined dungeons in order to collect new upgrades and abilities. Customize your play style by mix-and-matching your upgrades, and use the abilities you collect to expand your world." Teasing an abundance of secrets, it sounds like you'll create your own path through the Metroidvania world...
A fan is currently working on a new replacement engine for the classic RPG Ultima VII, which aims to bring it into isometric 3D while introducing a bunch of quality-of-life fixes.
Ultima VII, in case you're unaware, was originally released back in 1992 for DOS computers and eventually received a port for the SNES in 1994. It is quite often regarded as the high point of the series and even won our own reader's poll last year where we asked our audience to select their favorite Ultima game from a long list of Ultima titles. However, it arguably isn't the easiest title for modern players to get along with, spawning the occasional review from frustrated players who can't seem to adapt to its "rough corners".
In the past, there have been...
Blaze's Evercade handheld has already had one helping of Bitmap Brothers games – but the catch was that they were all based on console ports rather than the Amiga originals everyone knows and loves.
Thankfully, the company is now seeking to fix that issue by releasing a second collection, this time populated by Amiga games.
The Bitmap Brothers Collection 2 contains the following titles:
Cadaver
Cadaver: The Payoff
Gods
Magic Pockets
The Chaos Engine 2
Z (32-bit version)
While we're a little sad that we're not getting the Amiga versions of Xenon 2, Speedball 2 and the original Chaos Engine, what's on offer in this second collection is still brilliant.
"The Bitmap Brothers games last appeared on an Evercade Cartridge back in 2021...
ModRetro's Chromatic FPGA handheld is coming later this year and will offer a new way to enjoy Game Boy and Game Boy Color games – but it's also getting its own titles (which, in turn, will be compatible with existing Game Boy hardware).
One of the most notable Chromatic games is going to be bundled with the device: Chromatic Tetris. Just as the original Game Boy included Tetris, ModRetro is hoping that this pack-in game will propel the Chromatic to bumper sales – as well as become a new standard in the competitive Tetris scene.
ModRetro CEO Torin Herndon spoke a little about Chromatic Tetris, which has been developed in-house at ModRetro in close collaboration with The Tetris Company "to ensure strict adherence to the Tetris brand...
The original Volgarr The Viking might have flown under a lot of folks' radar when it launched back in 2013, but it's one of those games where if you know, you know. It garnered a solid 8/10 from us when it landed on Switch and it's cultivated a hardcore, dedicated fanbase whose members are constantly speedrunning the game. Its precise level design and enemy placement met with widespread critical acclaim, but developer Crazy Viking Studios had no intention of ever making a sequel.
What gives, then? Volgarr the Viking II, a brand-new entry starring everyone's favorite grizzled Midgardian, is just around the corner, launching on the Switch eShop on 6th August. What changed the studio's mind?
Well, we sat down to speak with Kris...
