The Sonic homebrew and hacking community is for sure one of the most active communities when it comes to game modifications themselves. The fanbase has even made their own hacking contests and fan game events to showcase modified games from the franchise, to even games inspired by the blue blur himself, all of this in part thanks to SEGA's leniant use of the Sonic IP for Fair Use purposes.
One of the most recent projects to come out of the community has been the decompilations of the Retro Software Development Kit, or Retro Engine for short, which is commonly known to be the custom engine made for the recent outings of Sonic The Hedgehog that focus on its iconic and classic 2D physics, like Sonic Origins, the Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Sonic...
In an interview with the SanInPlay YouTube channel, Joe Robino, former senior camera artist and virtual cinematographer at Rockstar, confirmed that a GTA V story DLC was in the works. It would feature Trevor Philips in a central role. But the project was cancelled due to the popularity and money-making factor of GTA Online. Some of the DLC's elements even ended up in GTA Online, Robino says.
Below are some excerpts from the interview:
This report corroborates with what Steven Ogg, the actor who played Trevor Philips, said in an interview. "Trevor was going to be undercover, he was working with the feds," Ogg said. "We did shoot some of that stuff with 'James Bond Trevor', where he's still kind of a f**k-up, but he's doing his best...

The Sega Mega Drive / Genesis has never been short on amazing shoot 'em ups, and remarkably its library of games continues to grow even more impressive as time goes on, with the emergence of exciting homebrew projects from fans with a passion for the console.
A great case in point is ZPF — a brand-new sidescrolling shoot-em-up from the publisher Mega Cat Studios and the developers Perry "Gryzor" Sessions (artist & creator), Mikael Tillander (coding & hardware), and Jamie "JGVex" Vance (composer and voice artist). It sees players hop behind the controls of one of three playable characters (Knight, Gladius, and Gold) as they battle through a mix of fantastical, futuristic, and alien worlds.
The project has been on our radar for a while...
Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII and 18 other Square Enix feature phone games that were previously thought to be lost have just been recovered, as reported by the feature phone preservationist/researcher RockmanCosmo.
The incredible haul of games, which also includes various Kingdom Hearts titles, was retrieved by the Twitter user @NaoyaShinota from a single phone — a DoCoMo P-04B — and was recovered by using a debug cable method (devised by the Kahvibreak Discord member XYZ) that involves shorting specific pins on the FOMA side of a cable to dump internal memory contents of compatible DoCoMo phones using Linux scripts (you can find out more about that here).
According to RockmanCosmo's thread, some of these games are currently...
In the pantheon of PlayStation hardware, the Japan-only PSX surely stands apart as a unique slice of history.
While it was sold as a high-end digital video recorder when it launched in 2003, it contains an integrated PlayStation 2 console, making it a popular choice for hardcore Sony fans over the past two decades.
However, the system is facing an uncertain future due to the fact that the built-in HDD is already functioning well past its intended operational lifespan – and there's currently no option available when it comes to replacement.
Thankfully, the community is rallying to prevent this dark future from happening—and, somewhat ironically, two of the key members of the Xbox modding scene are leading the charge.

The brilliant Sinden Light Gun is now supported by the MiSTer FPGA platform.
In case you weren't aware, the Sinden is a modern-day light gun which is compatible with non-CRT televisions and displays, and uses a video camera in the barrel of the gun to 'watch' the screen, avoiding the need for external IR emitters or sensors around the screen.
Because the Sinden expects the platform it is running on to crunch the numbers, this adds to the processing workload – and, for this reason, it was assumed that MiSTer wouldn't ever gain compatibility with the lightgun.
However, the creator of the Sinden has spent "a lot of time developing a low resource driver that can comfortably run on the MiSTer and also removed many required components so...
Have you played VA-11 Hall-A yet? If not, you need to. Right now. Before you read the rest of this story. The game is just that good and I cannot believe you've missed out on it so far. It's also why you need to be excited for .45 Parabellum Bloodhound.
Okay, now you're back from that VA-11 Hall-A catch-up (see? Told you it was just that good), now you know why this new game is so exciting. Unlike the visual novel you just played, this will be an "Active Time Action" experience that will blend real-time and turn-based combat, and it is very, VERY reminiscent of Parasite Eve in both style and aesthetic.
Key features of the game as we know it so far:
Experience the tightly designed "Active Time Action" battle system, suitable for...
A new fork of the popular DS emulator, melonDS, called melonPrimeDS has been released. Developed by user makidoll, this emulator adds keyboard and mouse support specifically for Metroid Prime Hunters, similar to the previous PrimeHack mod.
melonPrimeDS aims to make the game more accessible by enabling traditional FPS controls. The emulator also offers several customized settings for screen layout, rendering and performance optimizations.
For those looking to try it out, the emulator uses a different config path than melonDS, as to avoid conflicts and requries a copy of the v1.1 USA ROM of Metroid Prime: Hunters to function. Other regions will not work due to the memory injection methods used.

Retro gaming consoles have seen a fair share of hardware modifications throughout the years, and with several advancements in technologies, previous methods of connecting those older video game consoles into a TV come at a huge loss of video quality with many players wanting to output a better quality image from their original consoles, or in some dire cases, connecting said consoles becomes entirely obsolete, as is the case with consoles from the 3rd generation (NES, SG-1000) and older, which used to connect with RF modulators to CRT TVs.
Those are just some of the reasons why many people have done an incredible amount of research into retro consoles and their hardware, to be available to create hardware modifications that would allow...
2002's The Thing is widely regarded as one of the best horror games based on an existing media franchise. Many licensed horror games are sadly relegated to genres that require a specific setup, such as asymmetrical multiplayer or short VR experiences, but The Thing — a third-person squad-based shooter — dared to go one step further, telling its own unique story that serves as a proper sequel to John Carpenter's 1982 movie masterpiece.
It's not a game that frequents mainstream remaster wishlists, but Nightdive Studios is nevertheless delivering what few of us realised we wanted with The Thing: Remastered. Announced during IGN Live and scheduled to land on the Switch later this year, Computer Artworks' original is getting the full revamp...
Songbird Productions announced earlier today that it will be rereleasing Super Asteroids & Missile Command for the Atari Lynx.
These two games, in case you never owned a Lynx, are essentially enhanced versions of the classic arcade coin-ops Asteroids and Missile Command, featuring updated graphics. They were originally released on a single cartridge back in 1995, and are frequently cited online as the final game that was published by Atari for the handheld platform before it was eventually discontinued.
According to Songbird Productions' announcement, this upcoming rerelease will feature all-new cover art. This appears to be loosely modelled after the original artwork but contains a bit more of a vaporwave twist to give it a...
While it has since gone down as one of Saturn's best games, it's easy to forget that NiGHTS into Dreams was greeted rather coolly by some sectors of Sega fandom back in the day – mainly because it was a game by Sonic Team that didn't feature Sonic.
Thankfully, those same disappointed punters can turn NiGHTS into something a little closer to a traditional Sonic outing via this new patch by @memory_fallen – released to mark the 28th birthday of the game.
"I've made a patch to give players a new challenge: the PEDESTRIAN MOD turns the game into a 3D platformer, where you control Elliot and Claris with some extra abilities," says the modder, who has a history of tinkering with Saturn games and giving them a new lease of life.
"Early...
Catacomb 3-D, the groundbreaking ID Software title that paved the way for games like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, is getting a new big-box PC release and it is available to pre-order now.
Released in 1991 for DOS, Catacomb 3-D was a follow-up to John Carmack's earlier titles Catacomb and Catacomb II, and was reportedly inspired by Ultima Underworld (which was still in development at the time of Catacomb 3-D's release).
It saw the player step into the role of a mage as they descended into the dungeons of Grelminar the Lich and featured many elements that would eventually become mainstays of the first-person-shooter genre, such as the appearance of the character's face on screen that would change as you take damage.
The rerelease was...
In a recent Q&A with investors, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa states the company has concerns over the use of AI, like LLMs, in its first party game development.
In the Q&A, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged the use of AI-like technologies in gaming, particularly in controlling enemy behaviours and recognized the potential of generative AI to enhance creativity but also raised the associated IP challenges. Unlike companies such as EA and Ubisoft, who have previously stated that they are exploring and implementing generative AI to streamline their game development processes, Nintendo seemingly remains cautious.
Furukawa states that Nintendo aims to deliver unique experiences that go beyond mere technological...
Over eight years and nearly 22,000 commits since the release of Dolphin 5.0 in June of 2016, Dolphin has evolved to become a stable and accurate emulator of both the Nintendo Wii and GameCube. It currently boasts impressive title support and a range of enhancements and features that elevate the emulation experience. In a big change forward, Dolphin is now moving to a rolling release model starting with version 2407 (for July 2024).
This new approach includes frequent updates with changelogs, hotfixes, and date-based versioning, eliminating the need for the previous stable release scheme. The new release strategy aims to provide continuous improvement without long development pauses, that should enhance both infrastructure and user...
Capcom streamed a new Capcom Next event on July 1st, with it focusing specifically on 3 games more than anything, these 3 games being Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, Dead Rising Deluxe Remastered and Resident Evil 7 for iOS and Mac.
During the Resident Evil 7 segment of the stream, one of the persons interviewed for the section was Koshi Nakanishi, who worked as the director for the game during its development. The questions go into how they determined the revival of Resident Evil as a horror game most and foremost, and how they went into the direction RE7 went after the backlash Capcom received for Resident Evil 6's action-oriented outing. Alongside that, they also went into detail about the upcoming Resident Evil 7 port for iOS...
We're going to take a little journey now, so please bear with me. Ys III: Wanderers From Ys is the third in the series of action RPGs; it first launched in 1989, with console ports following in 1991. In 2005, a remake was released – this is where we begin with the title Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana. It didn't come West until 2012. This remake was recently remastered, launching for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation in Japan during April 2023 and May 2024, respectively. And now we return to the reason for this historical detour! Marvelous Europe and XSEED Games will be publishing the remastered remake of Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana in the West (again for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation) during early 2025.

A new Nintendo Switch firmware update just landed. System software version 18.1.0 has been released and pushed out to consoles. The contents of the update are fairly minor, to the point of this firmware being a "rebootless" one, meaning the Switch doesn't even need to reboot in order to apply the new changes. According to known scene dataminers, it appears as though the new firmware exists only to add a handful of Japanese phrases to the system's "bad words list".
