Gamestop, the controversial retailer that was recently behind the closure of the beloved magazine Game Informer, has just announced the launch of several Retro Gamestops" in the US, where people will be able to purchase classic games for a range of old consoles.
The announcement was made yesterday on Twitter, with the company tweeting "THE CLASSICS ARE BACK. New Retro GameStops are now spawning near you." The announcement linked to a store locator and included a set of images with a list of consoles that will reportedly be in stock.
This list of platforms includes NES, SNES, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy, N64, Nintendo DS, Wii, Wii U, Nintendo GameCube, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS1, PS2, PS3, PS Vita, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, and Dreamcast. So...
Read Only Memory, the publisher of video game-related books such as Sega Dreamcast: Collected Works, has just announced it is now funding a new book from the freelance writer/academic Kat Brewster on the "fiercely competitive – yet surprisingly collaborative" world of speedrunning.
Any%: A History Of Speedrunning will take a look at the popular video game pastime, exploring its origins and how it has evolved with the emergence of things like YouTube and Twitch.
To do this, it will feature the different accounts from dozens of speedrunners and members of the community, who will offer their unique perspectives on a range of topics, such as what makes a good speedrunning title, how the scene has changed over time, and what the future has...
Poke Transporter GB is a homebrew app for the GBA that serves to bridge the gap between the old and new games, providing a way to pull Pokemon from the Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles into the third generation. This is done using a custom Multiboot GBA ROM that genuinely could be mistaken for official software for just how professional and polished the final version actually is. With the ROM loaded on one system, you insert the GBA game you want the Pokemon to travel to. On another system, you put the Pokemon you want to transport into your current box, and talk to the Cable Club attendant to initialize a trade. It's here where the magic really happens, with work behind the scenes happening to remove the Pokemon entirely from their...
When Grand Theft Auto III was originally released in 2001 across North America and Europe, it became an instant success, essentially changing the game industry in those territories overnight.
So it's no surprise, then, that Rockstar Games wanted to see the title come to other parts of the world too, with both Take-Two and its newly-famous subsidiary specifically setting their sights on the Japanese market as their next area of conquest.
In the past, Grand Theft Auto 1 and Grand Theft Auto 2 had been released in the region under two smaller publishers named Syscom Entertainment and Zoo Corporation, but for the third game in the series, Rockstar and Take-Two felt they needed to aim a little higher, singling out the Resident Evil...
Today's second (now-annual) Panic Games Showcase shows off recent and upcoming titles being published by Panic. (In case there's any confusion, the date in the title is for Australia and the date in the header image is North America.) All the games overlap with last year's presentation, which you can catch up on here. It's worth watching Panic Games Showcase 2024 in its entirety just for those developer chats, but there is also a trailer shown for each game.

Thank Goodness You're Here!

When combined, what do slapping and a platformer create? A slapformer, of course! Thank Goodness You're Here! is an absurd comedy slapformer set in a bizarre Northern English town. Panic Games Showcase 2024 features some...
Today's Nintendo presentation was a big one: it included a 20-minute Nintendo Indie World Showcase and a 20-minute Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase. One pattern that's emerged: there are too many collections of past titles! Every game mentioned will be released for Nintendo Switch; most are likely to be released for other platforms (which are not noted here). As always, when seasons are used to describe a launch window, it references the seasons for the Northern Hemisphere.

I am so happy that Fahmi's legacy is being carried on with the Coffee Talk series. The third instalment, Coffee Talk Tokyo, brings the late-night brews and chats to the backstreets of...
One of the largest and most ambitious mods yet for Super Mario Sunshine has just been released on the modding website Game Banana.
Super Mario Eclipse has been in development for four years and was created by a team of talented modders and creators led by JoshuaMK02 and Tempo. It introduces a whole new story to the GameCube classic, along with a bunch of new worlds, music, and the ability to play as either Mario, Luigi, or Il Piantissimo.
In addition to all of this, there are also a bunch of fun new shines that have been introduced for players to earn, along with original gameplay challenges like a set of races against a character called La Nokissia, a basketball minigame, and a mission where the player must deliver pizzas against a...
To celebrate Bub and Bob's 38th birthday yesterday, Taito released Final Bubble Bobble on the Nintendo Switch eShop in Japan — an expanded Master System port of the original arcade game (thanks Gosokkyu for the spot!).
Final Bubble Bobble was originally released back in 1988 in Japan for the Sega Mark III — two years after the original — and arrived in Europe three years later in 1991 for the Sega Master System. It saw the introduction of various improvements to the original game, such as the addition of more secret rooms, items, endings, and bosses.
The game was previously offered in 2019 as an Amazon Japan exclusive Prime Day pre-order bonus for the Nintendo Switch version of Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, but this new rerelease will...
Sid Meier's Civilization has remained a constant across its 33-year run; each of the mainline games has been at the very least pretty great. Even spinoffs like Civilization Revolution were excellent for what they were. But there is an argument that when you're that consistent, it's pretty easy to play it safe, and the jump from Civ 5 to Civ 6 was a bit too similar for our tastes at the time it launched.
Naturally, when Civilization 7 was announced, we were of course keen for what is likely to be another great game in a great series, but after being invited to a presentation from the developers at Firaxi and a hands on session at Gamescom, it has shot itself way up our most anticipated list.
Civilization 7 has flipped the formula on...
There are few video game series that have managed to achieve the same level of success than the Grand Theft Auto games.
Originally developed by a small team at the Dundee-based studio DMA Design in the mid-90s, the open-world crime series has since gone on to become a billion-dollar enterprise requiring multiple studios across the globe to work against the clock to ensure its latest entry is bigger, better, and more breathtaking than the one that came before it. Because of this, we're always fascinated to look back at some of the plans for the series that never quite saw the light of day and imagine the roads not taken on its path to superstardom: from playable cities and modes that were announced but never realized to ports of the...
Breaking away from their usual September Direct stream, Nintendo has announced today through their social media accounts about a new streaming event featuring both Indie and Partner showcases, scheduled for August 27th.
The stream will start off with an Indie World, showcasing several Indie projects and titles for the Nintendo Switch, and afterwards a Partner Showcase will follow, with this presentation being a "back-to-back" Nintendo Direct. The stream will begin on August 27th, 2024 at 7am PT / 9am ET.
Nintendo also noted that there will be no updates or announcements in regards to their upcoming Switch successor console in any of the two presentations being featured tomorrow.
There are faithful remakes, and then there's Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. A full one-to-one re-release of the PS2 stealth masterpiece from 2004, Konami and co-developer Virtuos are going so far as to re-use the original voice lines in their visual refresh 20 years later. It's an example of how the two companies are remaining intensely loyal to the source text; a move that could be considered bucking the trend as a lot of modern remakes allow new creative input. For better or worse, then, the final result is exactly what you expect: this is Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater with PS5-level visuals.
It feels like a strangely anti-climactic statement to open the Preview with, given that Snake Eater is considered by many to be the...
The Dreamcast is a console which perhaps made a more significant impression on the world of gaming than its humble sales figures would suggest.
It was the first home system to launch with the ability to connect to the internet and pioneered many other cool features – such as the VMU for saving data, which had its own display and could be used as a mini-handheld, and the ability to connect to a VGA monitor for sharper visuals. It also used off-the-shelf components, setting a trend that continues to this very day.
Clearly, the development and design of Sega's final home console is going to be of intense interest to fans, and our friends over at The Dreamcast Junkyard have been lucky enough to speak to Kenji Tosaki, who worked at Sega as...
KRUMB Games and publisher Judatone Studios are bringing Mekkablood: Quarry Assault to Steam, and it's a release that should be of interest to seasoned MechWarrior fans.
Set in the year 2082, Mekkablood places you in the role of "grizzled former trucker turned robojockey" Bill, who is involved in a dispute with TorxCorp over the mining rights to the valuable resource Fluxiam-7. The evil corp has not only stolen Bill's "treasured figurines" but also his girlfriend, Beth.
Mekkablood features "classic boomer shooter gameplay that's fast paced, and requires keys to move forward," as well as "balanced weapons" and loads of secrets to uncover.
If you like what you see, you can add Mekkablood to your Steam wishlist now.
Retro accessory maker and game publisher Retro-Bit has shown off some new products at Gamescom, one of which is a Saturn-style arcade fight stick.
The controller features an eight-button arrangement and can be used in both wireless and wired configurations. Two adapters are included – a Saturn one and a USB one (for use on systems other than Saturn).
Before you get too excited, it's worth noting that this is "subject to licensor approval", and we don't have a solid release date for it as yet.
If it does come to market, this should be a very interesting product for Saturn fans, given the high volume of 2D fighters which exist on the console.
Also spotted in the same images from the Gamescom show floor is a 2.4G wireless Dreamcast...
While there are many unkind souls out there who will tell you that the Sega CD isn't worth a look, this oft-maligned add-on for the Genesis / Mega Drive played host to the excellent Sonic CD – arguably the closest thing to a killer app it could muster.
The game has now been ported to the Genesis as part of the 2024 Sonic Hacking Contest and will be released fully on September 28th.
MDTravis is acting as the main programmer and custom artist, with @KatKuriN in charge of original disassembly and support. Devon was responsible for the initial port code reference and un-hardcoded chunks guide, as well as providing general support, while @vladikcomper supplied the DAC driver (MegaPCM v2.0) and MegaPCM2 debugging. @sleekflash16...

The next Fantasy Life game has been delayed… again…
I am always the first to stand up for developers who push back a release date because things need polishing up. Still, I'm not fond that Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time was originally supposed to launch in 2023, then 2024 (with the specific date later announced as October 10), and now it has been delayed again with an unannounced/undecided launch date. Part of my dislike is my concern that the game was so bad that it took over a year to improve; the larger part is...
A popular hack of Pokemon Emerald utilising the public decompilation project, Pokemon Elite Redux has just had its 2.1 update go live this week. For those who haven't heard of Elite Redux before, it's a hack that takes the base Pokemon Emerald experience and completely revamps it with a competitive focus. With training your Pokemon and swapping moves now being quick and easy to do within the game's menus, you're given the tools to plan and prepare for each of the game's challenges. And believe me, there are some real challenges. Each Pokemon also has three "innate" abilities alongside their standard ability, providing even more chances for interesting team building and synergy.
On my current scaled nuzlocke randomizer run, this...
Retro Games Ltd., the company behind the Atari 400 Mini and A500 Mini, is producing another system based on the iconic ZX Spectrum.
Simply called "The Spectrum", this new system launches on November 22nd, 2024 and will cost £89.99.
"Discover The Spectrum, a beautifully designed masterpiece that belongs in an art gallery, adorned with its signature rainbow colours," says the product's official description, as listed on the Smyths Toys website.
"This fun, quirky, and extroverted machine brings back the joy of accessible pick-up-and-play games, offering an experience that modern gaming has lost. With its timeless aesthetic and vibrant personality, The Spectrum isn't just a replica of the iconic Eighties home computer; it's a work of art...
SNK's King of Fighters series turns 30 today – the first entry, The King of Fighters '94, launched in arcades on August 25th, 1994.
Initially seen as a means of combining characters from SNK's popular Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury franchises, King of Fighters also included famous faces from some of the company's other games, such as Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier. It would also feature brand-new fighters who have gone on to become fan favorites in their own right.
By far the most interesting aspect of the first game was the fact that players didn't just use one character per bout, but three; the roster was grouped together into teams. For example, the "Fatal Fury" trio included Terry, Andy and Joe from that series. While players...
