The FPGA developer @_atrac17 has shared some new footage of @pr4mod's upcoming Terminator 2: Judgment Day release for Analogue Pocket, revealing that it will include Gun4IR lightgun support. Back in September, @_atrac17 had announced that the pair would be making a bunch of Midway titles playable on the Pocket FPGA device as part of their Coin-Op Collection series. This included the lightgun shooter T2: Judgment Day, which was originally released in arcades back in 1991, and took advantage of Midway's Y Unit Hardware. The arcade game saw players take control of a reprogrammed T-800 and loosely followed the events of the James Cameron film. Players would have to maneuver a crosshair around the screen, with the ultimate goal being to...
After more than 7 years in the making, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is launching today. This marks the end of a challenging development cycle for the Ukraine-based developers, GSC Game World, who experienced relocations amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine, cyberattacks and a fire in the Prague office. "It feels utterly surreal to say that, but after more than 7 years in the making, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is now released. That's totally wild. So was the whole development story." said Ievgen Grygorovych, CEO and Game Director, in a press release. "What started as the most ambitious game by GSC eventually turned out to be an ultimate personal challenge. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was always supposed to be a truly Ukrainian product, showing our...
The WipEout series was, at one point, considered to be a dazzling showcase for new Sony hardware. The original game accompanied the PS1's release in the West and arguably did a lot of sell the console to sceptical punters, while WipEout Pure and WipEout 2048 were jaw-dropping launch titles for the PSP and PS Vita, respectively. PS4 sadly didn't get a WipEout at launch, although it did get the excellent Omega Collection in 2017, a pack which pulled together content from WipEout HD and the aforementioned PS Vita entry and holds the distinction of being the only instalment to top the UK sales charts. Had things turned out a little differently, we could have been playing one of the most dramatic reimaginings of the series yet seen on PS4...
Retro Games Ltd. can't seem to catch a break when it comes to The Spectrum — its new recreation of the ZX Spectrum that is set to release later this month on November 22nd. First, retailers including Smyth Toys leaked the announcement of the machine a few days ahead of its official announcement, with the news quickly spreading across social media. And now, it appears that some other unnamed retailers have broken the street date for the product, sending it out to customers early and causing a wave of videos and photos to be published online despite Retro Games having arranged for press and YouTube coverage to be embargoed until the 21st of this month. As a result, Retro Games Ltd. is asking fans in a social media post "not to share the...
Atari has announced it will be publishing a new 7800+ compatible port of the Miner 2049er sequel Bounty Bob Strikes Back! Miner 2049er was an incredibly influential early platforming game created by the programmer Bill Hogue and Big Five Software that saw players take control of the mountie Bounty Bob as he explored the insides of Nuclear Ned's uranium mine in search of the criminal Yukon Yohan. The goal of the game was to make your way through each level, avoiding mutant enemies while stepping on all of the available platforms on the screen. It was first released for Atari 8-bit computers in 1982 and was later ported to the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and various other machines, where it ended up influencing a generation of creators...
Update [Wed 20th Nov, 2024 11:30 GMT]: The Kickstarter campaign for Obsolete Sony's new 220-page hardback book "Sony: Year By Year: A Visual Journey" is now live, offering a range of tiers for potential backers. This includes everything from a digital version of the book priced at just £10 to physical copies costing between £37 and £70. The most expensive of these will come with the digital edition thrown in, as well as a limited edition slipcase — the design of which is yet to be finalized. Looking at the amount raised so far (£22,000 as of writing), the book looks set to hit its £24,000 goal any moment now, but there are also some stretch goals listed to entice to support the campaign. These include additional pages, bookmarks...
If you're someone who loves old arcade boxing games, then we have some good news for you. Hamster has just announced that it will be bringing Taito's arcade boxing title Final Blow to the Nintendo Switch and PS4 later this week as part of Arcade Archives (thanks Famitsu for the spot!). The game will be released in Japan on November 21st and, as always, is expected to arrive on some selected digital storefronts in the West shortly after, with its new publisher, Hamster, releasing an English language trailer over on its YouTube channel. Originally arriving in the arcades back in 1989, Final Blow was later ported over to several home computers and consoles in the years following its release, including the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST...
Capcom vs. SNK 2 may be 23 years old now, but that doesn't mean the crossover fighter has given up all of its secrets. A fighting game expert known as Desk has been spending some quality time with the 2001 brawler recently and has documented a whole bunch of new combos in the game – some of which have the kind of hit counts you'd normally expect to find in Killer Instinct. As noted by the lovely people over at Event Hubs, Capcom vs. SNK 2 features a "Groove" system which offers new abilities and tactics. Six are available, and the 'A' Groove is the one Desk has focused on here, as it allows you to perform custom combos – basically, you can link moves together more freely, creating chains which wouldn't otherwise be possible. The...
Over two decades ago, a small company by the name of Bleem! appeared and offered a unique product in the gaming market, the ability to play PlayStation games outside of the original hardware, in what would be popularly known as "emulation" worldwide, be it in Windows PCs at the time (Windows 95 or 98), or also to emulate PlayStation games in a Sega Dreamcast, through their Bleemcast! emulator. This commercial emulator was a key target for Sony, who took the Bleem company to court over alleged copyright violations to their PlayStation hardware, and while the courts initially failed in favour of Sony, Bleem appealed several times, and after a heated legal battle going back and forth, the courts sided in favour of Bleem!, with the...
Super Monkey Ball is cute. Hatsune Miku is cute. Sega has its hand in both. It just makes sense to bring the real pop princess to Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble, the latest game in the long-running series. Paid DLC for guest characters Hatsune Miku and Godzilla will launch next week. The game will also be upgraded to version 2.00 (for free); this update includes a new patch that adds lots of new content. Two new guest characters will be available as DLC, and they couldn't be more different. First up, cheery virtual singer Hatsune Miku. The second one? Godzilla, the mighty King of Monsters. When playing as Miku, groove through stages collecting musical notes instead of bananas. Or cause destruction as Godzilla, with banana pick-ups...
Capcom Artworks' social media accounts have just shared a bunch of rarely-seen sketches for a collection of Capcom titles, including Street Fighter Alpha, Darkstalkers, Star Gladiator, and Cyberbots (thanks Eventhubs for the spot!). As you may or not already be aware, over the last few years, Capcom has been holding a travelling art exhibition across various locations in Japan, under the name "Tezuka Fighting Universe: CAPCOM VS. Osamu Tezuka CHARACTERS", with the event currently taking place at the Tokiwaso Manga Museum in Toshima City, Tokyo until November 24th. The exhibition allows visitors to check out a bunch of cool, new crossover art, created by Tezuka Productions' and Capcom's artists, but is also home to some incredible...
Bitmap Books founder Sam Dyer has been speaking to GI.biz about his line of excellent video game-related books and has opened up on the topics of nostalgia, growth and preservation. Bitmap has produced a series of coffee table classics over the years and has worked with the likes of Sega, SNK and Atari – but Dyer admits that it would be a "dream" to collaborate with Nintendo on a book in the future. "Who knows, maybe one day we could work with Nintendo," he says. "That would be a dream come true to produce books on their IP." Such a move is all part of Dyer's strategy for his company, which has been in business for a decade now. "What I want to do in the future is become a lot more known for this," he explains. "Say, for example, a...
Update [Tue 19th Nov, 2024 15:00 GMT]: Bleem is being relaunched as "the largest retro gaming project" via a crowdfunding campaign, according to rights holder Piko Interactive. "This project is the culmination of 11 years in the making for our company," says the Kickstarter page. "We have been collecting the rights of video game IP and pop culture IP like Cartoons, Toys, and comic books. And we are working on this incredibly weird and awesome project that we call Bleem.net." Original Story [Fri 4th Oct, 2024 11:00 BST]: Remember Bleem? If you were active during the Dreamcast years, then you just might, as it allowed you to play select PS1 games on your Sega console – a fact which Sony naturally took issue with. In the resultant...
Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of Donkey Kong Country's UK release, and so to celebrate, a musician and animator by the name of Bulby has decided to mark the occasion in style, releasing a new video featuring a Mega Man-style remix of one of the game's most famous tracks: Aquatic Ambience. In case you're somehow unfamiliar, Aquatic Ambience is the underwater theme from the classic 1994 Super Nintendo title. It was composed by the Rare maestro Dave Wise and was introduced in the level Coral Capers, before being reused in later stages such as Clam City, Croctopus Chase, and Poison Pond. The song is noted for its atmospheric and laidback sound and features a group of 8 waveforms forming a bassline at its heart before layering on...
Famed speedrunner Suigi has claimed all five major records associated with Super Mario 64, effectively enshrining himself as one of the greatest speedrunners of all time (thanks, GamesRadar). There are five categories when it comes to completing Mario's 64-bit debut really fast: 120 star, 70 star, 16 star, 1 star, and 0 star. Suigi has spent years perfecting his skills in the game, and on November 17th, he secured the world record in all five – something that many people assumed was simply impossible. According to Summoning Salt, an account which follows speedrunning world records, Suigi's stranglehold on those five categories might hold for some time yet. "Not only does Suigi hold all 5, but he holds most by a huge margin. Nobody...
Fans have just released two new improvement patches for the ill-received Sega Mega Drive title Fantasia from the developer Infogrames and its publisher Sega. If you were a fan of Disney and video games in the early '90s, you'll know that we were pretty much spoilt for choice when it came to great 2D platformers starring Mickey Mouse. There was Sega's superb Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, and Land of Illusion, Capcom's incredible Magical Quest series, and of course, Traveller's Tales' Mickey Mania. But that's not to say there weren't some disappointments thrown in there too, with one good example of this being 1991's Fantasia, based on Disney's 1940 musical film of the same name. Fantasia was notably slammed by critics...
Edia, the Japanese company behind recent re-releases of Valis and Tenshi No Uta has teased another new retro project, this time based on Wolf Team's "Anett and Earnest" trilogy. This series includes the Genesis game El Viento (1991) and the Sega CD titles Earnest Evans (1991) and Anett Futatabi (1993). Nothing beyond a piece of artwork has been shown so far, showing the three games mentioned above. El Viento and Earnest Evans are both action platformers, while Anett Futatabi is a side-scrolling fighter. El Viento received a North American release via Renovation Products, and Earnest Evans was also released in the region by the same company – although it was ported to the Genesis rather than the Sega CD, which meant the removal of...
Fans have released a new English translation patch for the Japan-exclusive PS2 game Detective Conan: Legacy of the British Empire (otherwise known as Meitantei Conan: Daiei Teikoku no Isan). The game is based on the long-running manga series Detective Conan (created by Gosho Aoyama) about a high school detective called Shinichi Kudo, whose body is shrunk down to that of an elementary kid after being forced to drink an experimental poison. From there, the series then follows the detective as he solves various crimes, under the assumed identity Conan Edogawa, while seeking to track down the organization responsible for his current condition and return himself to normal. The manga debuted in 1994 and was adapted two years later into an...
When it comes to the Atelier series, combat and synthesis are core gameplay elements. Upcoming Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land (first announced during August 2024's Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase) is no different, but both elements have been revamped to give the JRPG a new, fresh feel. Today, Gust and Koei Tecmo shared updated gameplay details alongside a new trailer. In the game, alchemy became taboo following the cataclysm that destroyed the continent of Aladiss. Yumia Liessfeldt's journey begins when she and her friends decide to unravel the mysteries behind the cataclysm. Mysterious characters obsessed with alchemy will try to stop Yumia from discovering the truth, including Noble in a Black Cloak...
We're all well aware that today's Atari is a very different beast from the one that blazed such a trail in the '70s and '80s with its arcade and console hardware. The Atari name has changed hands multiple times since the company's halcyon days, and, to be fair, the modern-day iteration is doing a pretty good job of leveraging the incredible legacy of the firm after some rocky years. However, the past decade hasn't been entirely plain sailing for Atari. Its much-hyped VCS revival ended up being commercially disappointing, and its ventures into non-video game worlds (like hotels) haven't exactly gone according to plan. There's another non-product which really sticks in the minds of some Atari fans, however: the Gameband. Launched on...
