With the likes of the NES and SNES Classic Editions, Nintendo kicked off a craze for micro-consoles that continues to this very day, with rivals such as Sega, SNK and Taito all getting in on the act and producing similar products. Annoyingly, Nintendo itself hasn't created another 'mini' console for some time, but you know you can rely on the community when it comes to scratching that itch. The insanely talented robertdunnart has created a GameCube Mini, which is a fraction of the size of the real thing – an impressive feat when you consider how dinky Nintendo's boxy beauty already is. The device is powered by an x86 Intel-based mini PC and runs games via emulation, and, as you might expect, there's no room for a disc drive...
We've had our eyes on 8BitMod's upcoming VMU Pro for some time now – and who can blame us? This updated version of the Dreamcast's memory card will offer more storage, a colour screen and the ability to play music. Oh, and it can play Doom, too. Whether or not a piece of electronics can run id Software's iconic FPS has long been a true test of power and adaptability, and the VMU Pro passes with flying colours, as you can see from the footage below. The VMU Pro joins similar products from 8BitMods aimed at the PS1, PS2 and GameCube. There's no solid release date as yet. It's not the only option on the market if you're looking for a next-gen VMU replacement – there's also the superb VM2...
In a new two-hour documentary from Valve, current and former members of the company talk openly about the creation of Half-Life 2 as well as finally spilling the beans on what happened to Episode 3, and even showing gameplay of early prototypes of the canceled game. On November 15, Valve released a large update for Half-Life 2 to celebrate the game's 20-year anniversary. The update includes new commentary, quality-of-life features, Steam Workshop support, and more. However, perhaps the most exciting thing to come out of this big Half-Life 2 celebration is a new two-hour documentary from Valve detailing the development of the famous first-person shooter and its follow-up episodes. And yes, they talk about Half-Life 2 Episode 3, the game...
Nintendo tracked down an alleged Switch pirate using a combination of Reddit posts and repair orders, a new lawsuit has revealed. As reported by Game File, Nintendo sued James "Archbox" Williams, from Surprise, Arizona, for allegedly violating its digital copyrights by selling pirated copies of Switch games. According to the lawsuit, Nintendo hired a law firm called Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp to investigate online pirate video game stores and found a user called Archbox it traced to Arizona. It then spotted a Reddit user called Archbox (Archbox was a moderator of r/SwitchPirates). Based on their posts, the law firm was able to identify Archbox as James Williams. Williams, it turns out, had various Nintendo accounts associated with...
For many people, Street Fighter II represents a certain degree of perfection and balance. Sure, Capcom has iterated upon the concept repeatedly since the early 1990s, but there's something beautifully pure about the earlier versions of the game, with their focused rosters and smaller move lists. Still, it's fun to imagine how games like Street Fighter can be updated and expanded in unusual ways, and that's precisely what modder Billy Time Games is doing. Following on from his Streets of Rage 2 hack – which allowed characters to level up, RPG-style – he's working on a patch for Super Street Fighter II on the Genesis that boasts experience points. "Currently working on an XP System for SSF2," says the modder. "Each 100,000 points...
Following the success of the Nottingham Video Game Expo earlier this year, the team behind the event is expanding and launching a new show in the British city of Bristol. The show will feature vendors, new games, food, drink and a host of guest speakers – the first to be confirmed is Worms creator Andy Davidson. Davidson is currently hard at work updating the legendary Director's Cut of the game for the Amiga. There will also be an eight-player Quake III LAN tournament and a Mario Kart 8 tournament, while the show's indie game arena will be operated in conjunction with Debug Magazine. "After the success of Nottingham Video Games Expo over the last few years, we felt it was time to venture across to other areas where gaming events and...
The Sega Channel was way ahead of its time. The service allowed Genesis / Mega Drive owners to download games to their consoles using a dial-up connection and was a forerunner to the digital distribution systems we all take for granted today. Two unreleased Sega Channel titles have just been discovered and preserved, thanks to the efforts of Sonic Retro Forums member ndiddy. Taking an image file uploaded by another community member, RisingFromRuins, ndiddy has been able to extract Klondike Solitare and The Chessmaster. "I was able to reverse engineer the tool that encodes the image file (NSF.EXE) and wrote my own that reverses this process," explains ndiddy. "There's a couple unreleased games in there (Chessmaster and Klondike) and a...
While Epic Games is best known for the free-to-play juggernaut that is Fortnite, it found initial fame with 1998's graphically stunning Unreal, which was followed by online shooter Unreal Tournament a year later. Both games are no longer available for download digitally, but Epic has given its blessing for The Internet Archive to host installation files which allow anyone to download and play them. As reported by Game Developer, a post was made on the Old Unreal Discord server which outlines Epic's view on the situation: The disc image files are here and here, but you can use Old Unreal's Windows-based installers for both if you fancy an easier ride (those can be found here and here). The Unreal series effectively ended in 2007...
Unless you're lucky enough to have been a child back in 2003 and not a jaded adult like us, you'd be forgiven for not even realising that Disney's Piglet's Big Movie got its own video game on home consoles. Tie-ins like this are almost always forgettable, but Piglet's Big Game is enjoying a second lease of life thanks to the fact that it's being compared to horror classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill (thanks, Destructoid). The game's soundtrack – composed by Doki Denki Studio's Philippe Codecco and Guillaume Saurel – is surprisingly dark and spooky, and this has led to the game going viral on social media. Check out this music – does it sound like it was composed for a game aimed at kids? Amazingly, one Twitter user even...
Pokémon may have ventured onto smartphones in recent years, but the core series is very much exclusive to Nintendo consoles – which makes the arrival of Tetris Forever all the more interesting. Digital Eclipse's latest 'Gold Series' collection celebrates the famous Russian puzzler, including multiple variants of the game as well as an exhaustive amount of detail and information about its development, history and evolution. Part of that is a timeline that shows some of the key moments in Tetris history, and it's here where you'll find a surprising inclusion – if you're playing on a PlayStation or Xbox console, at least. As noted by Joe Merrick, reference is made to Pokémon Tetris, a game released for the dinky Pokémon Mini handheld...
Since it was announced in October of 2022, I've taken every opportunity to write about Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island for over two years — and here's the best yet! The exploration friendship adventure game about friendship is set to launch on Nintendo Switch and Xbox in addition to PC, and an early December release date is set. In Canada right now, the temperatures are lowering and daylight hours shortening (hello, SAD!); a blast of warm, tropical sunshine could be exactly what the doctor ordered. Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is a non-linear adventure inspired by A Short Hike and the Ace Attorney games. Become a backpacker named Alex, stranded on a mysterious island's shores. As she starts to explore Ambrosia Island, she quickly learns...
For better or worse, so much can change in 10 years. In particular, things continue to escalate and become far more bleak when it comes to war. Some of the biggest video game franchises continue to glorify war by literally gamifying it, making violence and death look like a great time rather than what it is: horrifying. Ten years ago, This War of Mine portrayed war from the civilians' perspective. The game is dark, dripping in despair. Your morals are constantly questioned, eroding with time as desperation sets in. Strangers become family as people struggle in ruined homes to find food and water, fix the house, stay warm, and stay together. (Children came in future DLC.) When you fight, it is to survive rather than up your body count...
Half Life 2 is one of the highest praised videogames of the new millennium, and many people worldwide have fond memories of the game, with many still replaying it and modding it to this day. Many modern developers grew up with HL2, and it was the love for it that brought a group of them together creating Orbifold Studios, and with the brand new release of the RTX Remix technology by NVIDIA, Orbifold Studios announced a year ago a brand new remastered project for the original Half Life 2 titled "Half Life 2 RTX". Today, NVIDIA's YouTube Channel released a brand new tribute video in celebration of Half Life 2's 20th Anniversary, in which the development team behind the remaster talk about the different aspects and implementations that...
Update [Thu 14th Nov, 2024 16:35 GMT]: As part of its Zuntata Night 2024 November issue livestream, which took place earlier today, Taito and M2 have shared the first few images from Night Striker Gear, which was being described at the event as "a completely new work". The images show three new stages called "City 1", "Sky 2", and "Sewer 2", and offer a look at some of the fancy environmental lighting effects that have been added to the title, as well as the revised UI that now features an additional element representing the player's Gear level. You can take a look at the new images below: Images: M2 Co. Ltd/Taito As well as providing our first look at the new game, M2 and Taito also revealed that the game will be launching on PC...
Over the years, there have been quite a few fanmade conversions of Nintendo's classic arcade game Donkey Kong for the ZX Spectrum, as well as an official version from Ocean Software released in 1986. But earlier this week, a new port was dropped from the homebrew developer Artonapilos and the producer Bubu Marcianito that could potentially be the best version yet (thanks IndieRetroNews for the spot!). The new version of the game features characters that are significantly closer to the designs seen in the arcade original (especially when compared to Ocean's effort) and is much more colourful than many of the previous versions we've seen. It also doesn't seem to be much of a slouch when it comes to its performance either, with the game...
When Nintendo launched Super Mario Kart, it kicked off a trend of placing mascots in four-wheeled vehicles, which, you could argue, still exists today. While Mario has always felt at home in a kart (and has now sold millions of copies doing just that), other kart-based efforts have fluctuated between "good" (Crash Team Racing, Sonic and All-Star Racing) to "pretty uninspired" (too many examples to mention, if we're honest). There's a definite feeling that, despite Mario and Sonic's success behind the wheel, when a mascot gets placed in a racing game, the company behind the move has run out of ideas. It's unusual, then, to learn that WipEout (which is a racing game already, lest we forget) was very nearly reimagined as a kart-based...
Embracer Group has released its interim report for the period July to September 2024, and it hasn't taken long for fans to spot something unusual under the section "Announced PC/Console Releases as of November 14, 2024": an upcoming game from Clear River Games based on the Jaleco arcade title Formation Z. The find was brought to our attention earlier this week via one of our readers James Henderson, who rightfully pointed out that Clear River Games hasn't seemed to have announced any Formation Z game either on social media or on its website, despite what the report is claiming. And it has had us wondering exactly what this game could be. Over the last few years, City Connection (the owners of the Formation Z IP) has announced two...
Update [Thu 14th Nov, 2024 12:35 GMT]: Boogermann has now released his MSX core for the Analogue Pocket. According to the info shared on GitHub, the core currently supports MSX 1 cartridge ROM files, but Boogermann also has plans to implement floppy disk and cassette support, as well as an on-screen keyboard in the future, with the developer hoping to make further changes in the future. Original Article [Sat 24th Feb, 2024 19:20 GMT]: FPGA developer Boogermann has revealed he is about to release an MSX core for the Analogue Pocket. Created in 1983 as a standardized home computer architecture, MSX was a joint venture between ASCII Corporation and Microsoft. The plan was to create the format and then allow other companies to produce...
If you're a Blizzard fan, you may remember the Warcraft Battle Chest. Released in 1996, the big box collection included 3 CDs (containing Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, and the Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal expansion), and allowed players to purchase the lot for a slightly reduced price, inevitably paving the way for it to go on to become a best seller. Well, yesterday, Blizzard announced that it was releasing an all-new digital version of the classic '90s collection to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Warcraft I, featuring fresh remasters of the first two Warcraft titles. And better yet, it's available to buy now from Battle Net for PC (priced at £34.99). The collection not only features the new...
The publisher Songbird Productions and developer Eclipse Software are teaming up to deliver a brand new Atari Jaguar port of the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga shoot 'em up Wings of Death. Wings of Death was first released by Eclipse Software for the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga back in 1990 and was published at the time by Thalion Software. It is a vertically scrolling shooter that puts players in control of a wizard who has been transformed into an insect by an evil witch. The goal of the game is to guide the mage in its transformed state through various levels, with the player being able to upgrade their powers and transform into various other forms, including an eagle, dragon, and griffin, on their way to restoring their humanity...
