The SuperSega FPGA project has people excited and sceptical at the same time. A bold venture which aims to produce a system capable of playing Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast and Sega CD games, it will leverage cutting-edge FPGA technology to emulate these platforms on a hardware level – so, in theory, it will be just like playing on the real thing, with zero lag and no emulation issues. Since the project was announced, it has been branded as vaporware by some members of the retro gaming community, and until a real unit is shown working, that stance isn't like to soften. However, the team behind SuperSega has been in touch with us to propose a live interview to address concerns over core development, release timings...
In a statement posted to Twitter earlier this week, the creators of the popular PS3 emulator RPCS3 issued a warning to players about several "scam" PS3 emulators that have started to appear online for mobile devices. Speaking to its followers on the social media site, RPCS3's creators reminded people that its emulator "is NOT natively available for Android or iOS and that we will NOT be porting it to these platforms" before warning people to "stay vigilant!". It also claimed that "any footage you see is either completely fake, recorded on a real console or through RPCS3 itself, and branded as something else". In the set of messages, the RPCS3 creators don't exactly specify what emulators they are referring to here, but it's pretty...
Back in 2022, there were rumors of a remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn, Guerilla's first game in the Horizon franchise. However, this was not confirmed by Sony nor the developer but new developments appear to add credibility to those rumors. More specifically, the ESRB has provided a recent 'Teen' rating for Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for PS5 and PC, with the following summary: While no release date has been provided, nor has the title been confirmed by Sony, a remaster does follow the company's recent trend of its first-party games. In particular, this rating coincides with the recent PS5 Pro announcement and the game might accompany the console's launch. SOURCE
When Palworld released into early access back in January of this year, it drew attention for its similarities to Pokemon. Some called into question whether or not the developers of Palword, Pocketpair Inc, would come under fire, but The Pokemon Company issued an official statement that they had no plans at the time to pursue legal action, and would need to, "investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokémon." It appears that the investigation from The Pokemon Company has led to the decision of indeed filing a lawsuit against Pocketpair Inc, claiming that Palworld infringes on "multiple patent rights". Nintendo is seeking an injunction and compensation for...
Necromancers can communicate with the dead, which is a heavy cross to bear at times. But Necro Story isn't all doom and gloom. It's quite lighthearted, as you become an "evil" necromancer who prefers undead shenanigans to saving the world. Using minions to outsmart your foes, you can grab their souls to power up your team. Today, developer Rablo Games announced that Necro Story will be released in early October — just in time for spooky season! To celebrate the announcement, there is a new (rhyming) release date trailer. In Necro Story, journey to the underworld as Jaimus the Necromancer. Cast spells, raise skeleton armies, sign pacts with demons, and capture souls — all while guided by a mischievous ghost named Vivi. The whimsical...
Capcom's excellent Marvel-related fighting games are back in the spotlight thanks to the welcome release of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, and Atsushi "Tomichin" Tomita – who worked as a planner on many of those titles – has taken to social media to talk about how the first 'vs' game (X-Men vs. Street Fighter) came to be. Tomita reveals that within Capcom, there was some initial resistance to the idea of mixing Marvel characters with the world of Street Fighter, as neither X-Men: Children of the Atom nor Marvel Super Heroes were commercial hits in Japan, despite being popular in North America. Tomita reveals that X-Men vs. Street Fighter was very nearly called X-Men 2, but when the choice was made to introduce...
If you've been anywhere near AliExpress recently, you'll surely have noticed a proliferation of modded Saturn consoles which have had their CD drives removed and are primarily intended for use with a Saroo flash cart, which allows all titles to be loaded from the console's cartridge slot. There's a flood of these hacked systems coming out of China these days, often with transparent cases which show off the Saturn's internals. The idea is that by using a Saroo to load games, you don't need the CD drive, effectively making it a "Saturn Mini" due to the reduction in height. Some systems even come with bolt-on LCD monitors. It's been assumed by some people that the consoles used in these mods have faulty CD drives, but even so, members...
Thanks to its wide range of FPGA cores, support for physical carts and fetching Game Boy-style design, the Analogue Pocket remains one of the most popular retro-gaming handhelds on the market right now. Taking that into account, it's not all that surprising that rival companies have copied the design for their own devices. TrimUI, for example, has just announced the Brick, a device which takes a lot of inspiration from the Pocket (thanks, Retro Handhelds). The overall design is very similar, and you've even got the 'stepped' back (minus a cartridge slot, as this runs entirely on software emulation) and the three function buttons on the front. One new thing the TrimUI offers is an RGB light at the top of the device. Powered by an...
Images of what are supposedly a factory prototype for the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside a spec sheet have appeared on a Chinese forum. The renders show the device from all angles and even comparison shots with the original Switch are included. The most notable changes are the large 8 inch screen and two USB Type-C ports on the top and bottom of the device. Referred to as the "Switch second generation model STP" and "SWITCH2 model STP", the device appears to feature a familiar overall design and detachable joycons but without traditional rails as seen on the originals - perhaps confirming the use of a magnetic solution as per recent rumours? A spec sheet has also surfaced which appears to detail the above device...
My Time at Evershine may have just been announced and is still early in development, but there is already incredible buzz around it. This ambitious sequel to My Time at Portia and My Time at Sandrock aims to innovate and redesign the life-sim genre while adding deep roleplaying elements such as character progression. It features a completely new art direction, revamped gameplay mechanics, an array of romanceable characters, a story that takes over 40 hours to complete, and town management (new to the series). Developer Pathea Games is once again turning to its fans to help fund a very early stage of development, saying that crowdfunding allows for it to plan for better features and links it with direct player feedback while key...

Whispers of the Luminaries is an Aussie-developed idol-themed murder mystery game inspired by the Famicom Detective Club and Ace Attorney series. It is about finding hope in the darkest of times. Following the release of the game's demo via Steam, its Kickstarter page gained hundreds of followers waiting for the campaign to begin. And it will start soon: the opportunity to back the game will begin in early October. Whispers of the Luminaries puts you in the shoes of a detective, following four idol trainees as they try to become superstars. The game gets darker the more you uncover the mystery. RocketRobz continues to work on and improve nds-bootstrap, the homebrew project that allows Nintendo DS backups to be run from an SD card. Five years after the project's initial launch, and a year after nds-bootstrap's v1.0.0 release, version 2.0.0 has just come out. This marks the 200th release of the homebrew, and to celebrate, there's been numerous bugfixes and compatibility improvements made. A full rundown of the additions and tweaks can be seen below, with the download available on the official thread in the source link. Source
PlayStation emulator DuckStation is rightly regarded as one of the best ways to play PS1 games on modern hardware, primarily because it's incredibly accurate, has loads of features and offers an excellent level of performance. However, creator stenzek has recently made some changes to how DuckStation is distributed that have caused some drama in the world of emulation. As reported by Gaming On Linux, the emulator – which was previously open-source under the General Public License – was changed at the start of the month to a PolyForm Strict License and then a couple of weeks later to the CC-BY-NC-ND license. This means that DuckStation cannot be used commercially, and no derivatives are permitted. The emulator cannot be packaged up...
We haven't seen a homebrew game for the NUON system for ten years, but now the wait is over – the failed DVD / games console hybrid is getting another bedroom-coded release (thanks, V-SNES). Noel Rojas Oliveras' PS1 Net Yaroze title Insta Death has been ported to NUON with the help of ScarPixel / DragonShadow Industries 'Yaroze Wrapper' tool, which was created in the mid-2000s. Homebrew coder gwald has used the tool to port Insta Death, fixing bugs along the way and adding in analog control, high scores, an attract mode and a button combo to exit the game. You can download it free of charge here.
Following its debut in arcades back in 1998, the fantasy-themed hack n' slash Gauntlet Legends was ported to various home consoles, including the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, and Dreamcast. But what you might not know is that there was also a Game Boy Color port in development at one point in the late 90s, from the UK developer Climax, which according to one of its developers — Richard Underhill — was cancelled at the time due to supposed issues related to the Game Boy Link Cable and the inability to produce reliable multiplayer. Images of the game have surfaced over the years, but are often misattributed as screenshots from a cancelled Gauntlet: Dark Legacy port, and as far as we know no video of it exists online, which means we've...
SEGA Rally turns 30 this year, and to mark the occasion, Sega has teamed up with Wave Master to produce a special 30th anniversary soundtrack CD. The soundtrack will include music from the arcade original by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, as well as the tracks composed for the Saturn port by Naofumi Hataya. Mitsuyoshi is producing three new arrangements for the album and has posted the following message on social media: Here's the full track listing: DISC-1 SEGA RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP (Arcade: MODEL2A) SOUND! SHOCK Special Bonus Track MY DEAR FRIEND, RALLY -Vo Arr Ver. 2024-/ Takenobu Mitsuyoshi GETTING MUDDY -2024- feat. 20 years ago we saw what is to many the peak of the Pokemon series. Pokemon Emerald released as a definitive version of the series' third generation, combining the storylines of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire before it, and adding a post-game battle area the extent of which hasn't been seen since. If like me you still go back to the game once every few months, you might be on the lookout for a simple way to keep the experience feeling fresh and new. Today, posted on The Ultra Nerd's Twitter account, a collaborative respriting hack for Pokemon Emerald was released in celebration of the game's 20th anniversary. Emerald ReSprited features the work of 130 artists to give every one of the game's Pokemon sprites a makeover. There's a huge range...
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a standout game in the Zelda franchise, and one that many hold dear. With a remarkably open design for its time, paired with a simple and intuitive control scheme, as well as fun and engaging dungeons, it's one of many SNES games that remain great to revisit even today. Games like A Link to the Past have a colossal amount of replayability, furthered yet by the emergence of randomizers and ROM hacks to create unique experiences more than 30 years after the game's original release. Today we're not looking at a ROM hack though. Instead, we have an entirely unique fan game that captures the look and feel of A Link to the Past, and throws it into a new roguelike setting. The Legend of Zelda...
We've already reported on WeskMod's generous donation of a SNES PlayStation 3D model to the community today, but the modder is back with what now ranks as our most desired piece of retro gaming hardware – the Sega Saturn Slim. "I've spent the last 4 days or so working on a Sega Saturn "Slim" concept," he says. "Requires a VA-SG board, support for Saroo or Fenrir and won't require any board trimming! (removing the cart port for relocation will be challenge, though)." This proposed mod removes the console's CD-ROM drive, giving you the option of either using a Fenrir ODE or opting for the Saroo cartridge, which allows you to load Saturn games using the cartridge slot. "It's still early days, but early real-world fitment tests have me...
