"What happens when you combine the world's most popular computer entertainment system with the number one mobile video system?" asks the official page for the Advent ADV10PS2 in-car mobile entertainment module, released in 2010. "Everybody wins!"
We're sure many of you will be familiar with the concept of in-car entertainment products. During the DVD era, it was common to see these all-in-one devices strapped to the back of car seats, providing unruly children with something to gawk at during dull road trips.
They've since faded from memory thanks to the inexorable rise of smartphones and tablets, but back in the 2000s, some clever devil came up with the idea of fusing such a system with a PS2 – which, lest we forget, is also a DVD...
Obbe Vermeij, a former technical director at Rockstar North who notably worked on Grand Theft Auto III (among other GTA titles), yesterday acknowledged the recent fan effort to port Grand Theft Auto III to the Sega Dreamcast, calling the project "impressive".
Responding to a tweet from @falco_girgis (one of the individuals who is contributing to the fanmade port), Vermeij said, "There is an impressive effort going on to make gta3 run on the Sega Dreamcast. The first months of development of gta3 (back in 99/00) were done on the Dreamcast. For commercial reasons we switched to ps2. At the time we did think it was technically possible to pull it off on the DC and these guys are actually doing it. Nice one."

Yesterday, the ROM Hacker BillyTime!Games released a promising new fan patch for Accolade's 1994 Mega Drive / Genesis vehicular combat game Combat Cars, which aims to remove some of the frustrations from the challenging Micro Machines-Esque racer.
Combat Cars, in case you've never played it, sees players selecting from one of 8 racers, with each of these individuals having their own special weapon that they can use against their enemies across the game's 24 courses. At the time of its release, it received some pretty average reviews from outlets like Computer and Video Games, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and Mean Machines Sega, with publications generally praising its music and its multiplayer mode while criticizing "its slidey control...

It has also been conformed that a pre-launch campaign will be held in October, where customers will be able to pre-order a SuperSega for just 3€ / $3 – and get 30% off the price of the final system.
You can check out renders of the SuperSega mainboard below.
The discounted price is expected to be around...

Update [Tue 17th Sept, 2024 12:00 BST]: In response to our article below, Shinyuden has been in touch via email to state that "We have not made any official announcement yet on these titles and its showcasing at TGS has not been confirmed".
We asked Shinyuden whether that meant reissues of Slap Fight & Grind Stormer definitely wouldn't appear at the event, and Shinyuden has confirmed the games won't be at the Tokyo Game Show, with a company spokesperson telling us"
We've since asked whether Shinyuden is also denying the existence of these reissues, given the somewhat vague wording of the above statement, but have yet to hear back from the company.

Cosmo Machia has announced via a new trailer that the expanded version of the arcade shoot 'em up TriggerHeart Exelica, Triggerheart Exelica Enhanced, will be coming to Switch in Japan in early 2025 (thanks Gematsu for the spot!).
Cosmo Machia previously reissued the original 2006 arcade game on Nintendo Switch in Japan back in December 2023, before releasing it on PC and in other parts of the world earlier this year.
Now, though, it appears that the company also plans on bringing the 2009 enhanced PS2 port to the Nintendo machine as well.
This version of the game comes with a bunch of improvements over the original game, such as the introduction of a new playable character named Faintear (Original), tweaks to existing characters...
The crowdfunding campaign for System 3's Last Ninja Collection went live yesterday and remarkably managed to hit its initial funding goal of £10,000 within just 40 minutes. As of now, the total amount is currently £35,630, with the campaign still having 28 days to go before it ends.
If you want to snag your own copy of the collection, there are various tiers available, which you can back, with the cheapest option being a £25 digital download for either PC or Switch that comes with 8 UHD digital wallpapers. Yesterday, Sony revealed the PS5 Pro, the next iteration of its best-selling home console.
The big takeaways are that the upgraded console has a faster GPU, better ray tracing and AI-driven upscaling, all of which mean games run smoother and look better than ever before.
The good news arguably ends there, as it was also revealed that the PS5 Pro will cost an eye-watering $699 / £699. Gulp.
As you can imagine, the reaction to the pricing hasn't been particularly positive, which is hardly a massive shock when you consider much of the world is gripped by a cost-of-living crisis and the games industry has seen a flood of layoffs over the past year or so.
Is now the right time to release a console that costs seven hundred bucks? Probably...

Update [Tue 10th Sep, 2024 20:00 BST]: It looks like 8BitMods' VMU Pro will feature a color display:
Original Story [Sat 3rd Aug, 2024 19:30 BST]: If you've heard of the name 8BitMods, then you'll almost certainly be aware of the fact that the company creates an amazing line of 'new' memory card options for consoles like the PS1, PS2 and GameCube.
It would seem that the company's next project is for the Dreamcast. It has shown off a PCB which has button inputs in exactly the same place as the Dreamcast's Visual Memory Unit – a memory card notable for acting as a stand-alone handheld device.
This won't be the only next-gen Dreamcast VMU option on the market – we've also got the VM2, a crowdfunded VMU which is currently in the...
After a little tease late last week, Sony has officially unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro console ahead of its launch later this year.
Like the PlayStation 4 Pro before it, the PlayStation 5 Pro represents a mid-life refresh for the console, which offers considerably increased capabilities — at a higher price point — for users who want more, but to run alongside the regular, more mainstream console.
You'll be able to pick up the PlayStation 5 Pro for $699.99 (€799.99/£699.99). when it launches this November, just under 30 years on from the launch of the original PlayStation console.
PlayStation 5 vs PlayStation 5 Pro
The fundamental difference between the base console and the Pro is more power — and specifically more power to the...
2001's SEGAGAGA is one of the most unique games on the Dreamcast. In it, the player is tasked with restoring the fortunes of an ailing Sega against its evil rival, DOGMA, a company which owns most of the console market (and is clearly inspired by Sony).
Laced with humour and packed with Sega-related references, SEGAGAGA never saw release outside of Japan – by the time it launched in March 2001, the company had already announced it was to abandon the Dreamcast in favour of becoming a third-party publisher. Any chance of a Western release was totally off the cards.
The director of the game, Tetsu "Tez" Okano, has taken to social media to urge developers to create their own SEGAGAGA.
"If SEGAGAGA has a unique significance, it is that it...
Analogue has produced a series of different Pocket variants and is about to launch some more – this time based on the iconic colours the Game Boy Color was sold in.
The colours are Kiwi, Teal, Grape, Berry, Dandelion and Gold. The systems will cost $249.99 each and go on sale on September 12th; they will ship within 48 hours.
As ever, these will be available in limited quantities – but Analogue has said that it is aiming to ensure that the standard version of the Analogue Pocket remains in stock "steadily as possible."
Previously, Analogue has released special editions of the Pocket in glow-in-the-dark, Game Boy, transparent and all-metal designs.
Analogue also reveals that a significant OS update will be issued on the 12th.
A new cheat code for the Sega Saturn version of Doom has been found, 27 years after it originally launched on the console in 1997.
The code was discovered by @memory_fallen, and allows you to make walls in the game semi-transparent.
To access this feature, pause the game and then press: X, Right, B, Y, X, Right, B, Y.
The Saturn port of Doom isn't thought of in especially fond terms by fans of the series, but this is a cool little bonus feature – and the fact that it has taken almost 30 years to find it is pretty remarkable.
It's time to see what surprise PlayStation has in store for the future, with its PS5 Technical Presentation broadcast. Will we see a PS5 Pro? Or will it be something unexpected? Find out now, because the 9-minute livestream is kicking off now. We'll be summarizing the event as it airs, to stay tuned.
Cerny kicks off by going back to the PlayStation 5's launch, detailing the hardware in the system, and how it was an improvement from the PlayStation 4. Graphics, sound, haptics.
Developers have been wanting more, though. Having to choose between fidelity and performance mode has been an issue. Performance mode has been 75% more popular.
He casually drops PS5 Pro's announcement.
A larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, AI-driven upscaling...
