Microsoft's release schedule for 2024 might no longer include a certain action role-playing game (we're looking at you Avowed), but thankfully there are other titles under this same genre to fill the void. One of these happens to be the beat 'em up-style game, Towerborne, although admittedly the release model here is slightly different to your average Xbox Game Studios launch. Not only is it limited to just PC for now, but it's also exclusively launching in early access on Valve's Steam service. This rollout is to allow the community to be part of the "building process", according to developer Stoic. So, for this preview, we've obviously been playing the game on PC – fortunately, we were able to plug in an Xbox controller, so when it...
The French publisher Microids and developer Magic Pockets today shared a first look at its upcoming adaptation of the retro anime series Space Adventure Cobra, entitled Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening. The publisher first announced it was working on a video game adaptation of Buichi Terasawa's creation back in March 2023, but has since been somewhat quiet about the project. That all changed earlier today, however, with the release of the first trailer for the project, which revealed, among other things, that the game will be coming to PC (via Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store), PS5, PS4, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2025. This project, according to the new information released alongside the trailer, will focus on the first 12...
Yesterday marked 25 years since the North American launch of the Dreamcast, and Limited Run Games has joined the celebrations with a Dreamcast Trading Card game. The series contains "over 200 premium trading cards featuring art from the system's most iconic games and franchises", which will be sold as booster packs and a 'Hobby box', the latter of which includes 4 packs of cards. Both are estimated to ship in March of next year. Pre-orders are open now and close on October 13th, 2024.
Jada Toys has announced that it will be bringing out two new 1:12 scale figures based on the Ultra Street Fighter II versions of Cammy and Deejay — both of which are available to pre-order now. The two fighters are the latest in Jada Toys' ongoing series of Ultra Street Fighter II figure range, which has previously included toys based on M. Bison, Ryu, Ken, Dhalsim, Chun-Li, and Fei Long. The figures stand at 6 inches tall and come with two interchangeable heads, two hands, and an effect accessory, as well as multiple points of articulation, to help you recreate iconic moves like Cammy's Cannon Strike and Deejay's Air Slasher. This is in addition to a premium collectible arcade-style box, which you can use to display your figures...
A new 16-bit fan demake of the PS2 title Mega Man X8 has just been released as part of the Sonic Amateur Game Expo 2024 (SAGE 2024), as spotted by Rockman Corner. The free PC-based fan game has been in development for the last two and a half years and is the work of a single person, AlyssonDaPaz, and reimagines the 2004 action platformer in the style of the classic Super Nintendo trilogy. This means transforming its 3D stages into a series of sidescrolling levels, complete with pixel art graphics. It was built with tools like Aseprite, Audacity, Tiled, and Godot Engine, and is completely playable from start to finish, but, as is worth noting, only features one of the original game's playable characters: X. So don't expect Axl, Zero...
The PS2 is the world's biggest-selling home console, and was a huge commercial success for Sony's PlayStation brand. However, its launch was a little more fraught than it needed to be, according to former Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president Chris Deering. Speaking to Simon Parkin on the My Perfect Console podcast, Deering has revealed that the console was initially supposed to launch with a Sony-made sound chip, but plans changed at the very last minute in a rather embarrassing episode for the "Father of PlayStation" Ken Kutaragi. Kutaragi, as we all know, spearheaded the idea of Sony making its own chipset to power the PS2, known as the Emotion Engine. Even now, Deering is amazed that this happened. "They actually built a...
Not to be that person, but I'm a trained photographer who can no longer do much of it due to chronic illnesses. Because of this, photo-based games have a special place in my heart. Fomography is a story-driven game about an aging man reliving his life through the lens of a camera. Dangen Entertainment and Brendan Keesing have announced that the game will be published by Dangen Entertainment. Originally set to launch only for PC, Fomography will also be released on consoles. Fomography's story is about the effects of photos on dementia patients, a truly touching topic. You are an elderly man losing his memory is tasked with reliving his life: the joy, the places, the people, the small details, even the traumas and things he would prefer...
Less than a week ago, Mirthwood developer Bad Ridge Games detailed its post-launch roadmap for the medieval fantasy RPG life/farm-sim adventure game set to launch on September 11 (or September 12, depending on your region). A mere two days from launch, the title has been delayed until November. On the bright side, multiple features that were going to be coming post-launch will be included when Mirthwood finally does launch. After moving to Mirthwood, you have to create a new life for yourself. Build your home, explore, and battle. You can choose your own pace but it is easy to stay busy with things like farm-building, harvesting, rearing animals, and investigating mysteries. Your actions will result in access to skill cards. Befriend...
Sony has announced a "PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation" will take place tomorrow, 10th September 2024, hosted by Mark Cerny. Memories are weird: we think of them as very stable things, these absolute truths of what we experienced in the past, but even a cursory glance at research on the topic will let you know that memories are malleable and often incorrect, exaggerated by emotions or warped by time. DON'T NOD's newest game, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage plays with this idea in several ways. Like its two previous Life is Strange titles, Lost Records uses teenage lives as a way to examine societal ills and societal politics, this time taking us back to the heady days of 1995 as protagonist Swann befriends the cool outcast weirdos in town. The framing device surrounding the demo we played is that after almost 30 years of no contact, Swann, Nora, Autumn, and Kat...
The Dreamcast is now 25 years old – it launched in Japan at the end of 1998, and recently celebrated a quarter-century since its North American release. The first home console to come with internet connectivity out of the box, Sega's final domestic gaming system will have given many players their first taste of online multiplayer – but, as you'd expect, the infrastructure which supported all of that is long gone. You might, therefore, assume that the online side of Dreamcast's appeal is null and void in 2024, but you'd be wrong – and, as is so often the case, it's the efforts of hard-working fans which have enabled the console to go online once more. An Introduction To DreamPi There's actually more than one way to get your Dreamcast...
A new ROM hack that represents "nearly three years" of work has just been released for Super Mario World, giving players a challenging new adventure to play through. Simpatico is the result of a collaboration between the hackers BigRedBoy and RealBChin (with additional help from Stivi) and follows Mario's brother Luigi as he sets off on an adventure with his arch-rival Waluigi in tow. In the hack, players will travel across a colorful overworld hopping from level to level (with 27 exits in total), with the overall objective of each stage being to solve a bunch of puzzles and then lure Waluigi through various obstacles without him being able to touch Luigi. This requires a ton of precise movements from the player, as Waluigi will not...
A new fan translation patch has just been released for the Ukiyotei-developed SNES game Skyblazer, which sets out to reincorporate a bunch of elements into the action sidescroller that were previously removed from the Western versions of the game. Among these is the reintroduction of various names and story elements referencing Hindu mythology and Buddhist cosmology, which were stripped out of the English release back when it was initially launched in 1994. In the original Japanese, for instance, the main character "Sky" is repeatedly referred to as Karura (in reference to divine bird-like creatures from Japanese and Hindu mythology), the mysterious old man is called Brahma after the Hindu God of the same name, and Sorceress Arianna...
When you talk about the rarest PS2 games, Rule Of Rose always crops up in conversation. Developed by Japanese studio Punchline, Rule of Rose triggered something of a moral outrage in Europe, causing its UK release to be cancelled (the North American and Japanese releases were unaffected). The truth behind the controversy is even more shocking, and you can read the full story of what happened here – but because it was pulled from release in the UK, Rule of Rose is now something of a collector's item and can fetch prices close to £600. However, the value of the game appears to have dropped recently due to the discovery of old "new" stock in Italy, where European publisher 505 Games was based. More than one seller has stock of the...
The recent Sonic Amateur Games Expo (SAGE) has given us some cool fan-made Sonic titles, but one in particular has caught our attention. Sonic UltraSaturn by Un Sonic Ryu is a great-looking PC-based 2D Sonic tribute with some cool scaling effects for its 3D stages. Zones include the likes of Madness Mountain, Dynamite Plant, Crystal Frost, Rainy Savannah and Sky Chase, while the special stages take place in virtual isometric environments (like Sonic 3D Blast) rendered by Robotnik's XRI system. Un Sonic Ryu has even produced some fake commercials to support the game: You can download the game here.

The game costs $2.99 and can be played on your Commodore 64 emulator of choice and both PAL & NTSC C64 models. Here's a description taken from the store page: If you want to give it a try, you can buy the game here. Original Article [Tue 19th Dec, 2023 14:05 GMT]: The critically acclaimed indie platformer Spelunky is coming to the Commodore 64. Towards the tail end of August Nintendo made four games available to Switch Online subscribers for a week as a part of their ongoing Game Trials. Three of these games I had ample experience with; Tetris Effect I've played on PS4 and on the Quest 2, PowerWash Simulator I've recently been working through on the Quest 2, and Enter the Gungeon has been sitting in my Steam library for longer than I can remember. The last game was something of an anomaly for me, sitting comfortably on that list of things I really should look at at some point. That week came and went and I didn't pick up my Switch at all, but a friend of mine did. And since then there has been a single game he would not stop talking about: Cassette Beasts, the fourth of the...
Last month might have been a little on the quiet side, but September is gearing up to offer some heavy hitters. Both PlayStation and Nintendo have a major releases scheduled for September, with enough third-party variety to likely pique your interest if those aren't enough for you.
