The N64's analogue stick was revolutionary for the time, but it was also very prone to damage.
Not only is the stick a little more delicate than the ones we've seen since, it's also very much at risk if you accidentally drop the pad and it lands face-down.
As ever, the community is here to help solve this decades-old problem. Rocker Gaming – which has been working on improving the N64's stick in recent months – has just announced a small piece of plastic which could prevent those precious analogue sticks from future damage.
Dubbed "the N64 stick saver," it's described as "a TPU enclosure for the N64 stick that allows the controller stick to be safe during storage or transportation."
Rocker Gaming adds:
If you fancy getting...
Emulation-based handhelds are seemingly all the rage at the moment, and GoRetroid has revealed what might be one of the most tantalizing ones yet.
Details are scarce for the time being, but the Retroid Pocket 5 has been revealed and will coming packing a stunning 5.5-inch AMOLED screen capable of resolutions up to 1080p. This is a significant upgrade from the Retroid Pocket 4, which opted for a 4.7-inch IPS screen.
Not only that, but a new announcement today reveals that the Pocket 5 will come in four distinct colors, with one taking heavy inspiration from Nintendo's own GameCube. This makes perfect sense since the Pocket 5 will likely be more than capable of emulating the likes of GameCube and PS2. We've also got what looks to be an...
The MSX port of T&E Soft's 1984 action-RPG Hydlide will be the next game to come to the Nintendo Switch as part of D4 Enterprise's EGGCONSOLE series of retro reissues.
It will arrive on the Japanese eShop next week on September 5th (as spotted by Gosokkyu) and is expected to be released on international storefronts shortly after. If previous EGGCONSOLE releases are anything to go by, it will be presented pretty much as it was back in 1985, with the only notable addition being the inclusion of an English how-to-play section and menus to help players get started, as well as a gallery featuring development artwork.
Just to give a brief bit of background, for those unfamiliar, Hydlide is a game that originally debuted on the PC-88, before...
Donkey Kong Country turns 30 later this year. So, to celebrate this feat, a group of former Rare developers are getting together to swap stories about the game's development and its incredible legacy, at a panel at this year's EGX gaming event, taking place at ExCeL London.
The panel is scheduled for Saturday, October 26th, 2024 at 1:15 pm BST on the Live Stage and will feature the Donkey Kong Country designer Gregg Mayles, the composer David Wise, and the character artists Kev Bayliss and Steve Mayles.
Out of this group of developers, Gregg Mayles is the only person still employed at Rare, with Kev Bayliss and Steve Mayles currently working at the Yooka-Replaylee developers Playtonic Games, while David Wise is a freelance composer...
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of The King of Fighters series, Hamster has knocked 50% off the price of all 10 King of Fighters games that are available as part of its Arcade Archives series of retro reissues.
The discount applies across Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, and is also active on international storefronts too.
It is set to last until September 12th in the US and UK, so if you've always wanted to check out SNK's classic fighting series and haven't done so yet, there is no better time than the present.
The King of Fighters series, in case you are unfamiliar,, debuted all the way back in 1994, with the release of The King of Fighters '94 on the Neo Geo MVS arcade system. From there, it later spawned a large...

The rise of the Steam Deck has created a massive increase in gaming on Linux; users can easily install emulators and other programs on the device with a single click by using Flakpak releases. One of the most popular of which being Dolphin Emulator. The Flatpack release of Dolphin, however, is unofficial, as the emulator's team have never made an official build for Linux. That all appears to be changing, though, as one of the official Dolphin devs has gotten in contact with the unofficial build's team, and will be making the repository official, and under the control of the Dolphin Emulator team. A GitHub thread details the process, and notes that going forward, official Dolphin Steam Deck-compatible Flatpack builds will be distributed...
Joining the likes of Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Gex, Klonoa, and other iconic late 90s mascot platformers will be Croc: Legend of Gobbos. The original developers, Argonaut Games, announced that they would be reviving their studio, which shut down in 2004, in order to remaster the first Croc game. This remaster will also include what were thought to be lost development assets, developer interviews, and concept art. Croc: Legend of Gobbos's remaster will launch sometime this year, for "all current consoles and PC."
If you're keen on a whale-worshipping dark fantasy action game, you have very specific tastes. Seriously though, Selfloss has an intriguing narrative. It showcases the beauty of Iceland and Slavic mythology with a unique tale of wise healer Kazimir diving into the mythical world of whale-worshipping to help heal his wounded soul. Selfloss is described as a story of grief, loss, healing, and rediscovering hope in a world once seemingly devoid of light. A few weeks ago, it was announced that the game would be launching on September 12; today, the release date of the PC version has been moved up by a week. The console launch date hasn't changed.
This emotional adventure game set in a sea-worshipping world with whale gods follows an old...
There is something quite charming about storybook city-building Fabledom. Descriptions calling it "cozy" and "enchanting" are apt. The laid-back game has you ruling a world where fairy tales come to life, complete with giants, witches, flying pigs, and hidden secrets. Following a reasonable amount of time in Early Access, Fabledom was fully launched for PC last May. Console versions were on the horizon. Today, publisher Dear Villagers announced that the Grenaa Games-developed game would launch for PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox in two weeks.
Fabledom is chill enough to allow you to advance your settlement. Trade and use diplomacy to ally with your neighbors, or choose to challenge them instead. It's no fun to rule all by...
Pigsy, the developer behind the Genesis / Mega Drive port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, has teased another Castlevania-related project – but before you get too excited, it won't be a full remake of the game.
Instead, Pigsy has shared a mocked-up screen of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse on Sega's 16-bit console before pointing out that the most we'll see is a demo, rather than a complete port.
"I'm not planning to do a full remake of the game," Pigsy says. "Earlier this year, I did a lot of work upgrading the GG Shinobi graphics from Game Gear to Mega Drive and before I go back to touch them up I wanted to get more "8-bit to 16-bit graphical upgrading" practice. A 8 to 16-bit "remake" has different challenges from 32-16 bit...
If you didn't order a copy of the puzzle platformer The Meating back when it was initially being crowdfunded and have regretted your decision ever since, then we have some great news for you.
Mega Cat Studios has just announced it is making the game available for non-backers to purchase today across NES, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo Switch.
The game, in case you're in need of a quick refresher, sees players taking on the role of a ghostly minotaur named Kon who was butchered after a blind date gone wrong. Given a second chance at life by the God of Meat, Gyros, Kon must embark on a quest to track down his "tragically-sourced" meat and solve the mystery of his demise, by travelling across a bunch of challenging puzzle rooms with the...
In a recent interview with Eurogamer at Gamescom, the Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami was asked which game of his he would like to revisit if given the chance, and his answer was fairly unusual.
He seemed to shoot down the possibility of revisiting Dino Crisis — the winner of a recent Capcom survey on the subject — questioning whether there was "space" for the game to make a comeback given the success of Monster Hunter. Instead, he picked Sweet Home as a game that he'd like to remake — a licensed Famicom title from 1989 that he wasn't actually involved with but that later went on to inspire the Resident Evil series where Mikami obviously played a huge part.
Speaking to Eurogamer's Ed Nightingale and his friend and Shadows of the...
There are plenty of ways of connecting your Dreamcast to a TV set or monitor, including SCART, composite, VGA and – thanks to the wonders of modern technology – even HDMI. Many people continue to swear by component cables, mainly because they can be twinned with upscalers like the RetroTink 4K to produce a pin-sharp image on flatscreen TVs.
One of the best companies operating in this sector at present is HD Retrovision, which is currently putting the finishing touches to its Dreamcast component cable. This particular cable has been in development for a while, and the team recently ran into an issue which has delayed production.
"We discovered a quirk impacting VGA video (being used to derive the component video) that was causing...
Tozai Games has announced that Irem Collection Volume 2 will be released in Japan for PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch on November 28th (as reported by 4Gamer).
The collection, which includes GunForce, GunForce II, and Air Dual, will be available to purchase digitally for 3,520, with standard and deluxe physical versions available for PS5 and Nintendo Switch for ¥4,400 and ¥9350. As of writing, ININ Games and Strictly Limited Games — the title's western distributors — have yet to release their own updates on the status of their releases. We've reached out to them both for comment and will amend the article if we hear back.
It's safe to say the rollout of these Irem Collection titles has been a bit of a mess. When the first game was...

To the Moon is one of those games that will remain with you for quite some time. So long that it's getting a new episode 13+ years after it first launched. A remake for iOS/Android was released in 2007, and after being completely rebuilt with Unity, the game launched for Nintendo Switch in 2020. Until now, PlayStation and Xbox users were left out of the mix. That leads me to the first part of today's news: To the Moon is being ported to PlayStation 5 and Xbox. Those who have already played — and perhaps explored the rest of the series (Finding Paradise, Imposter Factory) — also have something to look forward to with the Beach Episode launching in a few weeks! It is not DLC, it is its own game. The entire title is technically "Just A To...
A fan port is currently in the works for Taito's 1989 arcade sidescroller Crime City for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis.
Crime City, in case you've never heard of it, is an action platformer that was designed to run on Taito's B-system hardware. It was released as a spin-off to the company's earlier arcade title Chase H.Q and saw up to two players take control of the police officers Tony Gibson and Raymond Broady as they try to take down various gang leaders and bring law and justice to a city.
Master Linkuei, the homebrew developer behind the unofficial Kenseiden sequel Hayato's Journey, is the person leading the development of this exciting new port, with his friend @RDiggoSilva creating a faithful adaptation of the arcade game's...
Fairy Tail 2's original launch window was late this year or early next, and I'm thrilled that the release date falls into this calendar year! (I'm just so used to delays.) The RPG sequel to the first Fairy Tail Game (2020), is again based on the popular manga and anime of the same name. This time, it explores the climax of the original work. A new trailer was unveiled announcing the release date; it shows off some of Fairy Tail 2's epic action and battles. But wait, there's more! Details on the digital and physical versions of the game have been announced.
Fairy Tail 2's story is the climax of the original work, the Alvarez Empire Arc. Natsu and Lucy are the main characters, fighting alongside other members of the Fairy Tail Guild...
Argonaut Games – the British studio which helped Nintendo create the legendary Star Fox – is back from the dead, it has been confirmed.
Originally established in the 1982 by teenager Jez San, Argonaut went on to produce 3D titles such as Starglider, Birds of Prey and Starglider 2 before teaming up with Nintendo to work on both Star Fox and the Super FX chipset which granted the SNES impressive polygon-pushing power for the time.
Argonaut would later branch out on its own and create Croc, the 1997 3D platformer which became a critical and commercial success on PS1 and Saturn – and the revived Argonaut has revealed that it is remastering it for a new generation.
Coming to "current consoles" and PC, the game will be updated with HD...
